Have had to stop watching the news coverage of the riots as it was making me more and more angry. Watched some masked youth telling the camera that the youths were doing this because they were angry. And his point was? Catzine your Martin Luther King quote sums this all up perfectly. What on earth do they think they will gain by causing all of this devastation apart from further running down peoples neighbourhoods (probably not even their own). They have no respect for at all for the innocent people and families they are causing fear and hardship to. Some of the rioters that I saw were only children themselves. Where exactly did their parents think they were?
I will have a candle lit all day sending my thoughts to all of those affected.
On a more OS note I did not achieve many of my big plans for yesterday but to day has got off to a better start. DD2 has helped me to do an inventory of the freezer and there is a strange mix of bits and bobs (including some unlabeled unidentifiable ones) defrosting in the kitchen. I have 2lbs of fresh picked blackberries in the fridge and have found a pound of them from last year in the bottom of the freezer along with some frozen apple so will be making jam later on.
There are two loads of washing on the line and another one on the go in the machine. The bread is made and my next job will to be to meal plan for the next two weeks. The living room got cleaned and de-cluttered yesterday and OH repaired and de-cluttered the bookcase in the dining room. DD and I will be tackling the rest of the dining room today. I have decided to de-clutter this week and wash the paintwork next week, which was more realistic than my original plan. Bite sized chunks and all that.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

I knew there was a reason I like living in my little village, even if the buses are carp, I can't see our local youths rioting - they are all too lovely. I think it is a disgraceful way to behave and it seems to just be an excuse to rob and thieve. I hope all of you who live in areas affected or who have family there are safe and well and that you all stay that way.
I would like to have a lovely big tidy up but never get round to it, DS is urning out to be a clingier child than his sis and often end up doing things one handed with him in the other, can't really complain though as it seems to be his only vice so far.
Jediteacher hope your little man is doing ok now and hope gailey doing ok but we haven't sen her around for a while so looks like it might be frantic in their house.
Well down to one meal to cook on Friday for OH's parents golden wedding anniversary, I'd like to say I hope we make that but since we're not even planning on getting married til next year we'll have to both make old bones to hit 50 years! The other family meal next week has had to be postponed, not sure til when. Got OH bringing me a nice bit of salmon home from work and going to make a gravadlax starter followed by a steak and kidney pie (I do really good pastry even if I do say so myself) and ice cream from the new ice cream maker for pud. Then up to the Lakes to visit my parents for a couple of nights on Saturday for a rest! Think my mum was angling for me to bring some strawberry cheesecake ice cream with us though with all the questions over whether I had ice blocks and an insulated bag! LOL0 -
I've just been tackling 'the room of doom' and discovered there is even mould growing inside the wardrobe. Softstuff it sounds like you are an authority on all things mouldy
, (sorry) living in a humid climate. Have you any idea of a UK inequivalent to the product you mentioned I could use on furniture? This particular wood is teak and it's been prone to green mould for years, is it particularly susceptible? Today I've wiped it all down with a mild bleach solution but I've previously used tea tree oil which is supposed to kill mould. Currently so fed up with it I feel like getting rid of the lot and looking on freecycle for a good old oak wardrobe or similar. DS asthmatic so no wonder he was coughing.
Your first issue is to remove the moisture. That's the bit I can't do here, in summer we end up at 90% humidity, so removing the moisture is not an option. You can remove the moisture though, with something like a large tub of damp rid:
damp rid
Once that's done you need to kill the mould. Dettol liquid contains an ingredient that's pretty good for that, you use it neat and in pretty large quantities to soak into the wood. Be careful while you clean to wear gloves and cover your nose and mouth, mould can be pretty nasty so I've heard.
I don't know if TSS is sold in the UK (the company that makes it doesn't exist there), but I have the feeling it would be a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut in UK conditions. So you might want to try these things first, they're a bit cheaper too. Mould doesn't grow on my chairs at all in winter here, but it was getting to be a twice weekly clean up job in summer.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Mould removal - we suffered dreadfully with mould in the last house - there are specialised products that kill mould and mildew that you spray on then wipe away - one I think is made by dettol (I have a bottle in the cupboard) bought from wilkinsons etc, they did work well when we used them. As softstuff says its all down to moisture and when we had a specialist look at the last house he said that ventilation was key, keep furniture away from walls slightly to allow air to circulate, have windows open and ventilation vents on windows open. Drying washing indoors really doesnt help either so again make sure you ventilate those areas. I added in those moisture absorbing tubs to the worst affected rooms too.
Using these techniques we managed to keep ours under control but it was hard work, and needed vigilance.
Have been watching the news with horror - having been a young child during Liverpool riots last time it brings back some awful memories. My DD had a shopping trip in Liverpool planned today- but I have insisted she change venue, my dad works in an area very close to the affected areas as a minister and I know that he will be out on the streets talking with the youth and I worry.0 -

It has reached the stage where I'm glad that DS1 and DS2 have taken over the main tv. At least that way I can avoid watching the news. I'm well known in the family for ranting and shouting at the television when something upsets me, so I have no doubt that I would be turning the air blue at the reports on the riots.
I'm looking out at clouds and wondering if today is a good day to go and pick blackberries. I've been putting off going for a while now. In fact I've been putting off doing a lot of things. Fingers crossed it's down to it been the school hols and insomnia and not a sign that I'm heading into a patch of depression. Oh well, at least I'm still knitting wonky scarves, so if the next ice age starts the family will have warm necks.
My oven is still out of action and I'm not sure it will be before I get a new one. I'm craving roast chicken and roast potatoes and am longing to have a baking session.
A question if I may...A house around the corner has a tree laden with bramley apples in their back garden and I know from the last few years that they just let them drop to the floor and rot. Would it be strange if I knocked on the door and offered to buy them/swap them for something? I don't know them, but I find it upsetting that the apples are going to waste.0 -

What I have been left with is a sure and certain sense that there is NO excuse for this behaviour. It isn't the civil uprising of a dissaffected youth, nor is it because of the economic situation or racial tension or any of the other catalysts for violence we have seen over the years. Remember the Toxteth and Broadwater Farm riots anyone?
Rioting isn't new. It happens in parts of this country every year. The fact that these riots are being carried out by people without any semblance of a cause, is.
These are the f eckless, greedy, lazy generation of young people whose sense of entitlement used to just encompass a career on benefits. Now it consists of the need to tweet and message eachother about when and where to steal en masse, taking down peoples' homes and businesses and probably lives before we are through. What possible excuse could any sane person give for that? Compare them to the young police officers who are of the same generation in time but a world apart in attitude. I'm hearing commentators say that this youth have no hope or money or sense of community. Well it takes no money at all to teach a sense of right and wrong to your children. And they are ripping the heart out of communites themselves. Hardly the act of people who are just fed up with the way the world is heading and feel they have to make their voices heard.
And so the conspiracy theories and waffle have started with people on the soap boxes, foaming at the mouth about "rivers of blood" and even that this has been instigated by the police in protest at their cuts. Some people seem to be happy this has happened as it gives credence, in their mind, to the doom and gloom they have been peddling in no usful way for years. Almost laughable if it were not so sad.
Mr Cameron et al need to show us they mean business this morning and a very clear message about civil disobedience needs to ring out.
I fear that the appeals to the parents will fall on deaf ears in the main but there must be some mothers who are distraught at the thought of their sons or daughters looting and setting fire to hard earned businesses. I don't pretend to know the answer but by God things have just got very much tougher for London in particular and I just hope the situation can be calmed before it snowballs.
Sorry for the rant folks. I hope all our families in the areas affected are safe and well. I don't do praying but they are most certainly in my thoughts.
If I could thank you a hundred times I would :T:T I'm just listening to a great youth worker on the news. You'd have loved his total debunking of all the rubbish being spouted by the apologists for the rioters. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0
