The scale seems greater this time but this has happened before - 1981 or 1982 and I can't even remember the cause then. I do remember that Liverpool was particularly hard hit and that in some cases there was a nasty anti-racial element. It spread quickly but died quite quickly too (although the fact that it was about 30 years ago may have dimmed my memory of it).

Just had a text from my oldest DS. Rioting is breaking out everywhere in London. He's in the West End fearing the worst. His firm got a beating in the last riots earlier in the year. Prestige firm, got away with window damage and graffiti last time. Rioting has broken out in the town where I used to live, and where my grandchildren still live. As my son put it 'All Hell is breaking loose". He says everywhere has been hit, Barking, Ilford, Clapham, Tooting, Colliers Wood, Croydon.

Oh carp. My mum lives in Earlsfield which is next to Tooting. My DD is in Peckham. Been trying to get through to her to make sure she's ok.

I'm having a sort out too. DH is putting shelves in half the wardrobe in DD1's old room. That way I can store all my craft stuff in boxes on the shelves rather than scattered all over the place.I want to keep the other half as hanging space as I store the winter coats in there.

DH emptied the wardrobe yesterday and was puzzled to find several of his old shirts in a bag-I'm planning to cut them up to make a patchwork quilt-my project for next winter.

I'm an ex-Londoner and I am absolutely disgusted with what is happening. Also very anxious and worried as my 80 year old grandma still lives in London just round the corner from Tooting town centre. It is completely mindless.

If I was in charge I would bring the army in.

This rioting is another reason why they should bring back national service in my humble opinion.

I was going to go to London this weekend but not so sure now. We will wait and see. I also have very close friends in the Met and know that they are out there dealing with this situation.

I hope it does all just die down and the culprits are properly punished.

On a more OS note had another successful shop with coupons. Got my bill down from £62.34 to £36.02. :T

I'm sorting out here too. Just purchased a blanket box (feels ever so traditional), managed to fit one up by hubbys side of the bed. Then I've ironed every sheet and cover, and neatly folded it ready to go in (yes, the ironing continues, I did 3 hours of it yesterday ). This all has the intent of cleaning out the wardrobe, which in our small unit houses everything from the pantry to the sheets, from the DIY tools to the vac and a few clothes too :rotfl:.

If anyone is at a loose end I have lots of junk here to sort. Was going to do lots and lots today but got a flipping migraine, its finally gone so may well begin ' plan A' I have post it notes next to the bed and write myself a list every few days, the last couple of weeks have been quite successful in ticking off my lists.

Right am off to do something useful :)

mambury, check first re digging tomorrow, my feeling is that they should be left in the ground for longer, 2 weeks I think so that the spores can disappear and the skins can get firmer

I have processed lots of potatoes in the past for the freezer and roast potatoes do well and also dehydrated, so maybe sliced in a warm oven. I think your potatoes will be too airless and warm, at least make lots of holes in the boxes

THanks for that Kittie..... I shall have a looksie first.

As far as the riots go.... I hate to be proved right but I felt it was coming. I feel for the innocents caught up in it all, but Cameron has finally decided to grace the country with his presence.....

My thought are for all of you that family in London/Birmingham and where ever they spread to next.

Hi greent and any other of my flylady friends that I have missed!

I think we are all preparing for hibernating with all this clearing out!!! My spare room is currently a large walk-in cupboard so plenty room for extras - but might be having visitors later this month so had better make space for them to sleep in here!

Will be be making an inventory of my freezer this week I think and start thinking of what I can buy for it when I see it reduced but will be prepared to buy other things that i see on offer now - you guys have really inspired me - Thanks

Thx for the advice re used compost - will certainly follow it up.

Seems everyone's on a 'summer clean' and glad I'm not the only one having a massive sort out. In my case it's to accomodate my craft 'stash'. Four sets of 4 drawers which stack from Poundland (half the cost of Hobbycraft) are a major help in sorting and containing all my stuff.

After going down three sizes so far old jeans are potential bags !! ...so I'm having to accommodate them as well as any number of other charity shop finds . Nothing like the feeling I had presenting my friend with the kind of bag she'd wanted made entirely from recycled materials. She loved it and it's a real OS way of making personalised presents.. I do, however, have the time these days which in the absence of my salary is a kind of currency in itself..

OH has also been creating more shelf / box storage space for me and has expressed concern this evening that I appear to be doing so well with the clearup I may not be able to use all that storage space!! Got my study - the boxroom to sort next so It's 'watch this space' ...How do those folk on Grand designs end up so minimalistic?

So sorry to hear of the impact of these riots on innocent people in London, especially those left homeless and initially destitute. My heart goes out to those whose family members live near there. I hope they are all safe. I used to drive through Tottenham every day on my way to and from work in Islington. It seems to be madness to be cutting back on Police numbers at this time and inevitable that crime rates will soar?

Up here in Lincolnshire it's Agricultural crime that's in the News today.. There also seems to be what is almost an obsession with arson in the region since I returned home 8 years ago. I don't recall this level of vicious attacks on ordinary people .

In my last H/Visiting job I recall a mother of 5 who had a wheelie bin set on fire literally in front of her front door when her kids were upstairs in bed. Thankfully they all escaped but it was not at all an uncommon way of dealing with grievances between neighbours in that town. What is the world coming to?

Anyway Have made a pot of chicken vegetable curry tonight and despite OH not touching rice it went down very well with our own potatoes. Used up all the leftover veg before they completely 'turned'and loads left. Being a 'chop and chuck it' sort of cook I prefer to make these pots of food to last a few days.
Must turn in as i'm on another health Walk tomorrow so should work up a good appetite for the rest. Dietician Thursday am so hope I've lost enough weight with all this exercise.. totally whacked tonight!!...

My Dd has just been on the phone she is planning to go into Manchester tomorrow night for a meal but says she will only go if there are no riots -what the hell is going on?

A load of pent-up frustration coming out I should say as whats going on. Very bad news for anyone living in those areas. Bad news even for those of us watching from the outside and feeling even more disillusioned with human nature at watching all the thieving going on under cover of those riots...

....and a lot of sighs of relief from those of us who fled from our bigger cities years back in plenty of time before all this started...because it was obvious it was only a matter of time before things imploded. Mambury - you arent the only one who has been thinking "Its not whether - but when - as to when this all kicks off".

Take care everyone who lives in those areas and positive wishes for protection for any of our friends/relatives that are living in those areas ((( ))). Please do report back here when you hear that your respective friends/relatives are safe.
