We had lots of rats - got two sisters but one died so bought another 'girl' - too late we found the pet shop had sold us a boy so we ended up with 9! And many more after. We loved them all but they live such short lives, and every loss was really hard. But yes, they make fantastic pets, are very intelligent and they loved chocolate buttons - if fact we knew when they would not eat their button they were not long for this place! I wish we could have them again but the short lifespan plus having a cat make it all to hard :(.

Kittie - wipe all the window frames with meths to remove the pheromones. Every single one (including where you haven't seen them). And get in all the nooks and crannies, inside and out. My parents had these but have managed to get rid of them (mostly) this way. And they have a lot of windows...

    SDG3 ,
Just remember before you beat yourself up that you did a GOOD thing, a charitable, kind and compassionate thing. If she chooses not to return the money then she owns the guilt.

If she does turn out to be a bad 'un and spends the rest of her days avoiding you, that would be money well spent.

Thank you, Mrs Chip, Hobsons Choice and Charlie's Aunt. I know I'm doing the right thing but final goodbyes are so hard.

Mrs Chip, I had fancy rats a few years ago and I loved them to bits and bawled my eyes out when they died, too. They are characters, aren't they, and so affectionate? It's nice to 'meet' someone else who is a ratty lover! Mine used to get very excited when they saw me putting my pyjamas on, because they knew that they would get a bed-time chocolate drop immediately afterwards. :D

Hope you do all come home today. I second everyone's thought regarding the vets. I was in absolute bits when my guinea pig died and they were very kind and understanding x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

((((Big hugs)))) for all those that need them,

My x-ray came back clear yesterday so my GP is happy for me to go back to work tomorrow. As much as I dislike my job it will be a relief to have regular adult company and not rely on my best friend to drop in. I'm not used to seeing her so much and we've run out of things to talk about! :rotfl:

I also had a CT scan yesterday for the headaches. Consultant called me late last night so I went into panic mode. Anyway whilst the CT scan came back clear for my sinuses, which he expected, it did show "an area of concern" and he and the senior radiologist want me to go in for an MRI asap. I should expect a call this morning to book the MRI. Really hoping my best friend is free around the time it gets booked in for; the consultant mentioned trying to get me in today and I don't have a penny for the bus fare until Friday neither does DH and I can't walk there, heck I can barely manage the bus stop! :rotfl:

DH is getting a bit worried with all the time off I have had and thinking I may get dismissed instead of redundancy.

I love pet rats too, and ferrets. The RV hates anything wee with a tail and says why cant I be ladylike and sensible and keep a goldfish. :D
I get very sad when pets die but I couldnt in a million years make an exhibition of meself by crying in front of other people. I would sooner dig a hole and get innit.

Thank you very much greenbe, I`ll get on to it today. So nice to hear of a method that should work

I don`t think any of us should ignore the news today, all of a sudden we are almost in meltdown and we cannot bury our heads in the sand. One Italian bank is about to go under and the big risk is that more will follow and the recesiion ahead could well happen and be very bad with it. I am going to listen to camerons speech today, no ifs and buts and no more second chances for us, no matter who is to blame, it is as it is. Most of us have the basics put away but the real risk is to jobs, businesses and homes. Dh and I will be ok but our children would not be, our 3 with their mortgages and two with small children. They are worried and one has had a very near miss with redundancy, another works all hours in a very stressful job just so that he can maintain success for the (very large) IT company who have already laid people off. Another in a professional job attended a `drumming up business` meeting yesterday. All gut wrenching worrying stuff

We need to get back to that war mentality, there are enough of us in the uk to keep this country afloat and I believe we can do it. As for me, I will pay off my credit card today and will keep spending if I can, cash mostly but a credit card when internet shopping, only to pay it off just after I use it (cc is safer for internet shopping)

In other words "Tighten those seatbelts now".

Oh heck...I'm in "Beam me up Scotty" mode (a la Starship Enterprise).

    Well - I've planned/re-planned/checked and cross-referenced. I've done all I can - <reaches for the seatbelt>

My sympathies to those who have children (be they "child age" or "adult age") to worry about as well as themselves. Fortunately - I've just got my parents to concern myself with - and they are pretty practical and I've had them get stocked-up with stuff/get their cavity wall insulation and done what I can to make sure they are prepared. Can't manage to persuade them to swop around for a cheaper fuel company/pay by direct debit/grow any food...but well...I've managed a bit of "getting them sorted"...

Kittie do you have a link to how the Italian Credit Rating downgrade will specifically affect Britain? I am only seeing news on the Eurozone. Thanks. :)

Thinking of you today Smileyt. :(

Hoping to sort out the woodpile today. It's such a lovely feeling having the hot water from the stove and knowing it is free to fuel and carbon neutral to burn. We are running low on seasoned wood though so need to get over to MILs to split the seasoned stuff she has stored for us there. Will bring in a few of the small unseasoned logs to set near the stove to hurry them up.
Can't believe how hot the stove gets. Was stood in front of the range cooker making fudge last night witht the stove going full pelt in the kitchen and thought I would melt. :o

Good luck today with the job search Becky.
Good news about going back to work Glitzer. Try to take it easy though. x
