We pay £145 pm for out electricty only!!!

mainly due to arrears when the insisted on only collect £35 pm dd when I told them we would need to pay more. OH's insistence on running an elec heater in the cellar to keep it dry drives me nuts (I sneak down and turn it off when I think i can get away with it)

Have you considered a dehumidifier? They're a lot cheaper to run. I bought one in the summer to get ready for next winter. Even in summer if it a miserable day and all the windows are shut it gets a fair bit of damp out of the air. I got two litres out in two days a few weeks ago. I got mine from Ebac and they're specially made for the European climate. It didn't cost much more than your electricity bill.

Friend's daughter emigrated to Calgary with her family and came back within 18 months. Said the winter was hellish and the people were miserable :)

There is an article in today's Daily Mail if you check it that gave me a bit of hope there. Its to the effect that a group of other European countries have proclaimed themselves "on our side" (ie Britain's side) re this and are helping us to "fight back" against this benefit tourism:T:A

I think some of the Conservatives realise the strength of feeling against being in Europe any longer - which makes me feel a bit hopeful. There seems to be a reasonable size group of Euro sceptics in Parliament - so fingers crossed.

Oh, I do hope so. How is it that the French can procrastinate and the Italians can refuse to toe the line but the British get the worst of both worlds? Our own laws seem to punish petty crime and even the accidental dropping of litter, yet we have illegal camps of foreign workers and people getting off very lightly for real crimes. We need a government that makes fair laws and punishes real lawbreakers, regardless of whether it offends the wrongdoers' sensibilities.

Next month we will remember the dead of two world wars, and subsequent conflicts. I sometimes wonder what they would think if they could see us now. :o
  • I'm not ignoring the debates on Europe or the state of things - it's just that my blood pressure will go through the roof if I even think about it.

I've been toying with the idea of a breadmaker for a while so I can control what goes into my loaves. Since I have a John Lewis voucher I've been looking at this one but I'm not sure if it's fancier than I need. I've had a look through the breadmaker threads and they all seem to favour Panasonic but I also wondered if I should hold off till later in the year and use my T*sco clubcard vouchers (from my credit card) on a double up for a cheaper breadmaker. Decisions. decisions:)

A plea for help - is there a way of getting whilte emulsion out of jeans? They are one of my better pairs so I'm hoping to be able to salvage them.

On the subject of emigration - hubby and I both have family in Canads and we've been lucky enough to spend many holidays there over the years. Much as I love to visit I would not consider moving there - the reason being they seem to be following the UK in terms of being a soft touch for the wrong people. My lifelong ambition is to emigrate to the US but it will have to wait until my parents are no longer around as they simply can't cope without help on the farm. I don't go in for regrets much as I think it's a waste of energy but if I have one it would be not making the move years ago when we first married. I'm sure the amount of sheer hard work we've both put in would have been more fruitful elsewhere.

Anyway enough of that - my mission for tomorrow is some more Delia scones and maybe some Twinks Hob Nobs. Maybe even some chocolate hob nobs!

Oh my goodness, anyone reading this last page would think this thread was a column from the Daily Mail.
One thing that does stand out to me however: is why is it OK for a discussion around where to emigrate to and then denounce immigration into our country (UKIPs policy). It just strikes me as being double standards.

One thing my mother always told me not to do was to discuss politics and religion. So I wont say any more on the subject. :silenced:

Hoping for another lovely sunny day tomorrow/today, I cannot believe how lovely the weather is in October.

Got one of them too - the cellar houses lots of expensive/ valuable hobby items so needs must. Eventually we will put a ch rad down there and tank it properly but that's £££ and will have to wait

JIL I could have said the same bit it was late last night and if one disagrees with certain voices on this thread one gets to stop derailing the thread and causing arguments!!

  • grandma247 my daughter had a similair accident and the car was a write off insurancewise but she was allowed to keep car (after being paid out) and her husband just mended the boot via scrapyard she drove the car for another 12 months before selling it all legal as insurance will write off car if it cost more to repair even if it is mostly cosmetic hope it helps you

Woke up to that good old Scottish standby- a wet sunday. There is NOTHING WORSE than a wet Scottish sunday!!!
Will get on with my Granny Sucking Eggs book. Finding it interesting but a tad boring but maybe it will pick up. Too full of facts & figures and no real life as yet. I like the sound of Lord Woolton though - we could do with more like him today.
