They're odd in Scotland, aren't they? (grins and ducks the expected missiles from the Scottish OS contingent).
I mean, how the heck does Kircaldy end up pronounced as Kircoddie? I spent half a decade on the eastern side of Scotland and never fully acclimitised to the broader versions of the accent.
People were kind enough to repeat things in a closer-to-standard pronounciation when they realised I was a puir wee sassenach and didnae unnerstand.:rotfl:I'm only married to a Scot so no missiles from me.
Grey the ones that get me is Ireland... for example Diarmuid... is pronounced Dermot??? surely its die are mew id...
It IS pronounced Diarmuid in Ireland.

Glenfiddick.
I know that Irish and Scots names get alot of stick for being obscurely spelled but we have to remember that they originate from a different language, ie Gaelic, and the spelling makes perfect sense in that language.
Thank you for the good wishes re the knitting. They are uber competitive twins so I can see it ending in tears (probably mine :rotfl:)I think they are keen as they have laid out ALL my wool and needles on the table and have even made me a pot of coffee.0 -
Accents
I also speak with received pronunciation, but I love regional accents & sayings & frequently drop them in to conversations just to confuse people. I was born in Lincolnshire & have lived in, South London, Bristol, where I learned 'Krek waiter's peke Bristle' I also spent a lot of time in Salford & have a Geordie relative who's accent I love, I now live nr Reading. So any sentence of mine can easily include slang saying from any of the above places. The only accent I can keep up for any length of time is broad Bristolian as I used it to read the '!!!!!! King Smith' stories to my children.
On the garden front, I have tomatoes & runner beans coming out of my ears & the carrots, peas & onions are still cropping well. I have made rhubarb jam & plum jam & I keeping a close eye on the local black berries.

Long time ago we had a Welsh-speaking visitor and I asked her how to pronounce the thing we saw on the motorway signs which in english is 'Services' - gwasanaethau. Her reply - "well, exactly as it's written of course!" Doh! and there was me thinking it was tricky!:rotfl:Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0
