Here you go Cranky, this is the recipe I use, taken from a Marguerite Patten book.

    2lb cooking apples
    1 pint water

    wash and quarter apples
    put into pan with water
simmer gently until very soft crushing fruit occasionally to extract the juice
put the cooked fruit through a jelly bag
reboil pulp with only ½ pint water
    add second juice to first
measure juice and weigh 1lb sugar for each pint
heat juice add the sugar stirring over low heat to dissolve
    boil rapidly
add 2tbsp white binegar and 3 tbsp fresh chopped mint for each pint
continue boiling until setting point is reached
pour into hot jars and seal down.

Now another way is when you make an apple crumble or pie etc to save the peelings and cores etc, cover with water and do the same as above, basically the jelly only costs the price of sugar as you are using bits that would normally be thrown away.

The plain apple jelly is also nice instead of apple sauce served with pork.

Thank you. That reads better than any I've found. I do like clear instructions. I also like the idea of using the apples for something else too. Mint will freeze, so I will freeze some and save it until I have enough peel etc.

I made rhubarb and ginger jam today. While I was showing ds what I was putting in the pan, the cat fell in the washing up bowl, which was full as we'd just washed up from cake making. We laughed so much at the soggy moggy that she left home for 30 minutes. The boy's first jam making lesson was memorable all right!

Sorry to barge in on the conversation but i am gobsmacked i left my towels on the washing line whilst out blackberry picking and someone has nabbed the lot!!!

People who can't keep their hands off other people's stuff really wind me up. I'd be knocking on your neighbours door and asking if they'd taken them in for you because they thought it was going to rain as you saw their daughter as she was leaving your garden.

Psst...the Christy summer sale is now on. Haven't looked to see if there's any good things but...

It might work but such a lot of people these days have no conscience at all. It can't hurt to try it.

    *WARNING RANT ALERT*

Sorry to barge in on the conversation but i am gobsmacked i left my towels on the washing line whilst out blackberry picking and someone has nabbed the lot!!!
I saw the neighbours daughter run out of my garden which brought my attention to it but i have no evidence of who stole except my prime suspect and it will cost a small fortune to replace them all. Yes ALL since my daughter let the bath over run an hour or so this morning!!! Somedays huh?!?:(

Still there is always tomorrow and I have a lovely batch of
blackberries, now where did I hide that bottle of wine?!? ;)

Wow thats really not good if your neighbour as nicked your towels,if they nick towels theyd nick anything...........problem for her is is that she will have to dry the towels after she as washed them then perhaps you can go and nick them back from her line .........I did see in tescos some beautiful eygptian thick towels of various colours......:D

Saipan you can freeze them just as they are and either destone them on thawing or if you are making jam you can pick out the stones when the plums are simmering. They float to the top and you can see them when you stir.

    Hi grandma247

Many thanks for the advice :) - the first batch are freezing as I type :j!

    Have a good evening -

jaxx, I just finely shredded the cabbage, lightly cooked it and googled for a cream sauce recipe. I cannot remember the ingredients but it was easy. I just mixed in the sauce and froze it in tubs

Ceridwen, that re debt is very very scary. I assumed the gov but it could very well be the others that you mentioned

Thanks grandma, my instinct was right really, I thought that is what you might do. I am not using vac bags for dehydrated foods any more. I am looking forward to having lots of them in a cupboard, ready to crumble and make soups as if by magic
Could I ask why you are not using vac bags for dehydrated foods anymore, as I had planned to use this method for mine. Thanks.

kittie may have other reasons but I find that dehydrated veg keeps very well in glass jars so I would save the vac bags for other stuff. I made mushroom soup the other day from field mushrooms gathered and dehydrated last year and it was lovely - and no unwanted side effects/illness either.

Evening all - just a quick question I was hoping someone may be able to help with.....trying to dip our toes into growing to save a few £££s and really enjoying it. We have strawberries in hanging baskets which have been really productive, I was just wondering do I need to do anything with the long "runners" which have grown - I've confused myself by googling it! Also, have a gooseberry seeding which has flourished into a mini bush - I know that it's not likely to produce fruit this year, but should I really have two to pollenate each other or will I get fruit from just one?
Sorry for the daft questions :)
