Here you go Cranky, this is the recipe I use, taken from a Marguerite Patten book.
2lb cooking apples
1 pint water
wash and quarter apples
put into pan with water
simmer gently until very soft crushing fruit occasionally to extract the juice
put the cooked fruit through a jelly bag
reboil pulp with only ½ pint water
add second juice to first
measure juice and weigh 1lb sugar for each pint
heat juice add the sugar stirring over low heat to dissolve
boil rapidly
add 2tbsp white binegar and 3 tbsp fresh chopped mint for each pint
continue boiling until setting point is reached
pour into hot jars and seal down.
Now another way is when you make an apple crumble or pie etc to save the peelings and cores etc, cover with water and do the same as above, basically the jelly only costs the price of sugar as you are using bits that would normally be thrown away.
The plain apple jelly is also nice instead of apple sauce served with pork.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.

Saipan you can freeze them just as they are and either destone them on thawing or if you are making jam you can pick out the stones when the plums are simmering. They float to the top and you can see them when you stir.

Kittie could you possibly post the cabbage in cream sauce recipe please? Have two cabbages left from my crop & would like something different. We've already had dolmas, coleslaw, cabbage & bacon this week, & have shredded, blanched & frozen a few am running out of ideas now

edit: re US debt, they may come up with a last minute agreement ie monday night. In the meantime just watch the damage to the stockmarket. I believe that we hold 1/3 of their gov bonds

This is fabulous - I did the same thing - just using a recipe from tinterweb specially for slow cookers - a friend who has pork for Christmas lunch coated the pork joint with it before cooking and said it was gorgeous. I did a cinnamon one and another, plainer one - I did worry that I'd overcooked it when I opened the cooker up - it looked like brown toffee before you start pulling - but was fine.
I also make small pots of compote regularly - just very slowly cooking fruit like plums, damsons, apples, peaches - anything that goes a bit wrinkly when it's past its best for fresh eating - with a tiny splash of water in the pan - my son prefers compote to jam which is a big plus as there is no need to add sugar. It's great because you don't need to have a glut of fruit to make it worthwhile - just whatever is looking a bit sad in the fruit bowl!0 -
Kittie i use a mish mash of jars at the moment, Coffee jars,clip top kilner and others. I have been buying up the 300g jars of coffee in mr S for £2.15 and now have enough for a year. As they get emptied I will use those for my veggies but in the future I may have a rethink and if they are not too expensive I might get locking plastic boxes because they stack.
My stocking up for winter is going great guns thanks to mr S kindly sending me lots of £4 vouchers for a £20 shop. I shop very carefully and buy extra of some things just for putting away. We have also decided that since electric is only going up 10% we are using our electric heaters instead of the central heating this winter. They all have a frost setting so will stay on all winter and just be turned up as needed and we will use the gas fires downstairs when it gets really cold.. The central heating is a double whammy because you not only have to pay for the gas it uses you have to pay the electric that it runs on and that is not just a little bit either.0 -

Sorry to barge in on the conversation but i am gobsmacked i left my towels on the washing line whilst out blackberry picking and someone has nabbed the lot!!! :mad:
I saw the neighbours daughter run out of my garden which brought my attention to it but i have no evidence of who stole except my prime suspect and it will cost a small fortune to replace them all. Yes ALL since my daughter let the bath over run an hour or so this morning!!! Somedays huh?!?:(
Still there is always tomorrow and I have a lovely batch of blackberries, now where did I hide that bottle of wine?!?-2lbs
Goal: lose 7lbs0
