    Apple Core & Peeling Jelly

    1¾ ounce dry pectin

Is this an American recipe? I'm wondering because the measurements are in ounces and cups. Can we get dry pectin over here? I've only ever seen the Certo liquid pectin.

Also, would the recipe really need pectin as the pectin in apples is in the peelings and cores.

Re the weather. Kittie, you must be a bit more west than us. We can see the Somerset coast from here on a clear day and yet we've only had a bit of a breeze today. We also had a few showers, but luckily I was still able to get some washing dry as one of my washing lines is under the trees in the garden and unless the rain is constant, it stays pretty dry under there.

I have seen Pectin in Asda although I did not look closely so do not know if it was liquid or not

I have never used it, it just reminded me of my cookery lessons at school when we made jam and learned about pectin.
  • What an enjoyable couple of days we've had with the Lincolnshire heritage weekend. Today was particularly interesting visiting the oldest house in Barton - among the many articles that even I remember were darning mushrooms for socks as well as a series of 1940s 'Stitchcraft' magazine priced then at 7d (?about 3p)- I remember my mother telling me that during WW2 that anyone on a weeklly wage of £5 was earning very good money and that most ordinary working people were on about £2-3 / week. She also added that a loaf cost 4d ( ?1.5 p) - doubtless Ceridwen you'll be able to do these calculations better than I can?!

Anyway OH was saying that 7d in wartime was a lot of money and these magazines were probably the province of the more affluent. modern day , monthly craft magazine seeem to be about a fiver and as interesting as they are my craft tutor always comments on how expensive they are. She's real OS teaching us as much recycling / getting our 'craft stash' as economically as possible. I'd hazard a guess that the ordinary housewife picked up the Make do and Mend tips from more economic sources.

We whizzed over to the coast at lunchtime and then to a guided walk around Victorian Caistor. It really was most interesting especially so, to hear the inside story of some who'd been involved in Village SOS in Caistor, especially the REAL story of how the BBC had edited the programme to present some of the people in an unfavourable light.. It seems Sarah Beeny only went to Caistor 2 or 3 times in the whole year....

As an old 'How to live better on less book' from the 1980s used to say - holidays are a frame of mind...We also get to sleep in our own bed at night. Our bedroom's lilac which we find restful.. I refuse to have a tv in the bedroom since we moved north although I do keep a cassette player to listen again to my vast collection of audiobooks.. used to use these when travelling to and from work. they kept me sane . Now they help me to fall asleep!!

Great tip on keeping cucumbers in foil as they do seem to come in clusters like buses....! ....still a lot to harvest and here's hoping nobody will suffer too badly with the winds.

Henry, the eco cat continues to present himself for hoovering up Jennicat's leftovers and she's currently holding her own. We keep them apart- She's about 2.27 kg and he must weigh 5-6 kg... not fat just solid muscle and a real boy - always hungry.. in the morning I'm getting cats meowing in stereo!! So a real OS moggy then...

Time I was off to bed - Monday's always a lie in since we retired - just because we can. For those of you having to head out to work - have a good week

:D By golly, it's good to be at home again and hello to the formumites, will be in the back pages a goodly while to make sure that I don't miss out.

Well, the small wet weather system which accompanies me on any holiday has followed me back across the Pennines and is now squatting above Provincial City, just so I can get wet whilst returning the hire car to the depot.

The tally of holiday misadventures in my group involved two hospitalisations, two other group members retiring from the fray ill, several knife wounds, wallowing in 4 inches of mud, a dead Landie and a fallen tree which narrowly missed my tent. Par for the course, really......:rotfl:Flat is full of sodden muddy gear as had to pack down in the pouring rain and it may be some days before normal service is resumed.

Thank goodness I had the wit to book today as holiday, too.

Thanks for that link. I've never seen the silver spoon pectin before. It does look like it's a powder as it's in sachets. Next time I'm in Asda I'll have a look for that as it would be handy to keep in the storecupboard.

It is in powdered form Giger. I get mine in Tecso.

Good to see you back GQ. It certainly sounds like you had an adventure!

Well, it's very windy here this morning. I've just been up to the chicken's field to take the canopy off the small swing bench we have up there to avoid it taking off. I don't think they're too keen on this wind, they don't like getting their feathers ruffled and they're a bit squawky.
