It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Paid in chickens - what was the blokes response to you saying that? Not to mention if people didnt go to carboots then he wouldnt have a job now would he?? Obnoxious !!!!!!!!
Hear hear :T People are too quick to judge without knowing people's background circumstances. And a pretty nasty character trait to try to make someone feel inferior in some way (whilst making themselves feel all righteous at the same time). I think they call it small man syndrome
Anyway I'm not sure my answer would have been quite so polite (or clever!) as paid in chickensso well done for putting him in his place. Hopefully it will make him think twice before opening his big poisonous gob in future.

Wow, I only have to pay £5 a week for a privately-owned, secured, off-road space (not London, mind). Surely the council will let you get a resident permit for a cater though, would have thought you just need to speak to the right person (the right person probably doesn't work in the "parking enforcement division", or whatever they call themselves.)
ONly if the persons car is registered and insured here, which even if she was willing to do, would ring alarms with benefit agency etc etc so not worth messing up things for.0 -
It was 1972/3 , so nearly 40 yrs ago ..I thought you were younger then that?
Guessing I come over as more "energetic" than I am then?:rotfl::rotfl:
Nope - I was indeed at work in 1972/3:( - its been a L..O...N....G time:(:(
Thinks....I need a <lying down sleeping> smilie.....
or a <won the lottery smilie> and a crystal ball to check them out to ensure I do win said lottery and could resign.....LOL...0 -

Scary isn't it? Only part-time in my case anyway as I was at college.
Remember life ruled by the 4 hour power slots? If we had 4-8pm, mum rushed home from work and put stuff on for us to finish when we got in, then went back to work to finish off there.
When we had 12-4pm, it meant her coming home from work at lunch-time, putting the meal on to come on towards the end of the session, so it was done by the time we got home, whanging the washer on and having a quick hoover. Because you dare not set the timer if there was no power 8am-12 noon.
And having to reset the gas central heating to run 24 hours so it worked when we had power whenever that was, because the timer ran on electric.
Then doing A level homework by candle light and heating water for drinks and hotties on the open fire.
Arghh.
And the minister using an electric shaver to shave by candlelight! If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I remember the power cuts very well.0

I really cannae think why I have no memories of this period - as I know I was working full-time by then and really dont recall any disruption at all.
Either its early onset Alzheimers in my case then:eek::rotfl::eek::rotfl: - or maybes not everyone got affected by this.
Back in the job I had then - the World of Work was such that those in the type of job I've pretty much always ever done "had life easy" back in that era. I recall no pressure whatsoever - and that was the norm for us. So - I certainly went into work as normal 5 days a week (or if we were given time off - then I dont remember that - as I would certainly recall being upset by having cut pay:cool:). In those very "easy" days in the World of Work - we might all very well have just "floated round the building" just chatting if we were unable to work for 2 days a week in there due to lack of power.
I remember - with distinct nostalgia - when the thought literally never crossed any of our minds to "justify our existence" every hour of the workday and we read/chatted/had long coffeebreaks/etc and literally didnt worry in case our employers decided that meant we were "surplus to requirements" because of it. When there was work to do we did it - when there wasnt neither they nor us worried ourselves about it.
Cor - it was like living on a different planet back then to what employees (including myself:() have had to deal with for years now....These days employees hardly dare draw breathe or be off work ill (no matter how necessary) in case of "REPERCUSSIONS".:(
(hence why its easy to detect a very distinct "fed-upness" when I refer to w*rk - because I recall when it was so different....).0 -
I lived 7 floors up in a multi-storey flat and during the powercuts I had to haul a high pram - with a newborn and toddler in it- up all 7 flights of stairs in the pitch dark
No lifts/no stair lighting.

I remember babysitting my brother in the staff room while my mum was working imagine getting away with that now! There were ashtrays everywhere including next to the tills.
I also remember smoking rooms on every ward at the hospital but smoking on the ward was a little before my time.
There were them co-op books you filled in, either a full page of stamps with 5 on or a line with 40 on. My mum went to two co-ops in search of a dropped stamp so she could finish the book off to get the pound and buy some bread.0 -
