Be careful of will writing services which offer to do you a will for free. They appoint themselves as executors and milk the estate by way of charges

Goodness me! I never knew that, thanks for the heads up. No wonder they all live in massive houses and drive splendid cars!!!

Was thinking about the title of this thread...I know there are no workhouses anymore, but does anyone know if soup kitchens still exist? I remember reading a while back that some were being forced to close down somewhere and wondered if that was because of the law or finances or anything else and did it apply to all soup kitchens?

I'm not sure about soup kitchens, but I know a soup van still exists in Edinburgh (at least it did last year), I think it was run by the local church(es).

Dearie me, I thank my blessings I can afford to eat. Seems very sad that in a land where obesity is a problem there are those with insufficient food.

The Salvation Army run one in Falkirk - somewhere near the High Station I think and there is still one in Glasgow too. I think the Glasgow one is more of a roving one where they go out and feed people. I've been looking for something for my department at work to do in terms of charitable or worthwhile organisations and I was looking into this kind of stuff.

The challenge though is that whilst everyone wants to be charitable and give some time to help suddenly they only want to do it between about 8am and 6pm. I'm not sure some of my colleagues really get it at all:(

Huge thanks to all for the cat, hash and soup kitchen info.
Reading that sentence back, it doesn't half look weird! :D
I'll definately be trying out the recipes...got a few tins of corned beef from an Approved Foods order some months back...and will be looking in my area for soup kitchens or equivalent (as a just in case/one day scenario or to offer help if needed) though it's doubtful given the geography of here.
The cat though just gave me a filthy look when I decided to keep him in tonight because of chancy weather. Funny how cats can look all superior at us, eh? He's a right wee besom though and it's only because I've grown to actually like him that I care, so he'll just have to lump it. :D

Jedi I hope your little boy id continuing to improve. I have lit a candle and sending positive thoughts your way.

Nulabula thanks for the link. It was interesting reading. I have lost 9lb in the last couple of months so have made a start and started walking to as well as from work. Thats two 20min walks a day. I really do not think it is my thyroid so think weight loss and exercise is the way to go.

taurusgb its amazing what the OH's can do when they have to isn't it. Glad you are at home again, hope things are on the mend for you.

Mardatha I looked at thoe her photos as well, who is on the bike?

winchelsea I am not sure what other uses there are for out of date cream of tartar but I bet someone on here will know.

Have done nothing OS today. Have worked an extra shift and come home to an empty house so apart from bringing in the washoing Oh put out and sorting out the kitchen I hace lounged on the sofa with complete control of the remote :j.

Just feeling the warm glow from a small glass of last years HM damson gin. Will be making some more tomorrow along with jams and chutney.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

I love cats, can't pass one in the street without talking to them. :D Quite often they come up and speak first.
The bikes, some pics are of our bike and there's one of my son & daughter on his bike .
  • My cat is very much an outdoorsy one. Even now with a bit of rain he's gone out. He never believes me when I say it's raining, hailing, snowing etc and has to have the door open to see for himself. Often he'll sit on the doorstep while its raining in the hopeful chance it will stop.

Last year there was inches of snow on the ground and still he tried to go out. He could cope with a couple of inches but when it was up to his tummy he relented and stayed inside. After I'd cleared a path he would walk up it to sit on the wall in triumph as he'd managed to escape for a bit. I suppose it's like people after a couple of days not being able to go out you really want to go out even if it's just to see a bit of sky and fresh air.

My cat is an outdoor princess. She has a catflap but will wait for me to push it open or open the door, although she will use it herself if no slave is around :rotfl: She's fantastic in the garden - sits under the fruit bushes and frightens the birds off my veg :T And the presents ......... some of which are alive when she brings them in  When she's bored she plays "bait the lab" including running under the dog and nipping her tummy on the way through. Inside the dog submits to everything the cat does with a confused look on her face, outside it's traditional dog chase cat stuff. Needless to say the cat alway wins :)

Some of you are going to hate me now - it's too darned hot! Back door open and fan on at 10pm and over 25C yesterday and today, still 23C now. And I was ironing, lining and hanging winter curtains plus putting up a pole over the front door and curtains there too!

  • Well had a lovely visit southshire (if all too brief) to make sure BIL ok after his heart thing. Car ran well and fairly economically so good job there too.

Ginnyknit, hope you got the pan thing sorted otherwise tea works well, boil up at teabag in water in the pan and leave to cool then the burnt bit should be much easier to scrub.

Jedi, big hugs from our family to yours. Don't know quite what you went through (thanks heavens) but have a small idea as DS "forgot" to start breathing when he first arrived and had to be tubed and taken to SCBU so have some idea of how scary it must have been for you. Glad to hear he is a lot better now.
