Anyone an experienced jam maker - just a quick question ! :)

I am making cassis for Chr*stmas with brandy, sugar and blaccurrants off the lottie.... I know that when the time comes, I will be loathed to throw away remaining brandy soaked fruit after straining....can this be used in a batch of jam??? seems such a waste of fruit (and brandy!) to lob it on the compost heap :)

the C-word is on its way ....Sainsburys have dscreetly started stocking fancy tins of biscuits already!

I don't know if I would fancy brandy soaked jam on my toast in the morning ;) but I bet they would be great in cakes or puddings?

It can't be that harsh if you're still considering Christmas!

Hey! We don't know these folks and their situs - I don't anyway.

I do admit that Christmas is a beans on toast day when it has had to be and I have no family in the UK, only a brother who lives thousands of miles away. with my SIL and niece..but...some folk kinda have to do Crimbo.

Sometimes we all need a rant.
There's little bits and pieces which help - but it takes thinking about..and learning..which is what the forums are all about.
I've learned tonnes the past few weeks being a newbiw. :)

Reminds me of something that happened last year. Someone brought 2 labradors into the kennels where I work - both had been seriously ill in the previous month.

Their owner had made some sort of alcoholic brew with plums or damsons and thrown the residue onto the compost heap. The labradors found it and promptly gobbled it all up (as only labradors can) :D.

The pair of them were discovered later staggering and falling around the lawn with glazed, bloodshot eyes and looking like a couple of chavs after a night on the town:rotfl::rotfl:.
They both had severe alcohol poisoning and nearly died  - they had to be hospitalised and put on drips.:o

The owner was bemoaning how much it had cost her at the vets (making it a very expensive homebrew) and was really cheesed off when I told her that I had read (somewhere on here) that she could have actually used the fruit to make jam/cakes, etc.

Oh bloody hell!!!! I have a very expensive watch which I bought when I had money and never leaves my arm (before I had the house). I noticed this morning that there was some damage to the face so off I went into town at lunchtime. It seems I have given it a big crack and have broken the face. The bezel seems ok as hopefully are the diamonds but I am looking at a MINIMUM of £500 to have it repaired!!!:eek::eek::eek:

They are going to ring me with a proper quote when they start taking it apart.

Back to gruel for me then. Good job ebay have free listing this weekend. :rotfl:

Redlady - definitely check your insurance and also get a second quote.

A few years back I got my watch battery replaced at Timpson and it was supposedly a lifetime guarantee so when it died a year or so after I trotted back expecting a new one. They said it wasn't the battery and needed a new mechanism (or something like that) at a cost of £350. Although it was an expensive watch and I've had it years I was a bit taken aback so decided to hold off a bit.

Anyway a few weeks later I popped into another Timpson, didn't mention the previous lifetime guarantee and hey presto they announced it just needed at new battery at £30. Quite a difference and don't ever trust Timpson.

I'm not suggesting the jeweller is at it but certainly worth a second opinion.

Good luck - I'm a bit sentimental about my watch and would be quite upset if I didn't have it.

Just checked the "Wild Fermentation Book" by Sandor Ellix Katz and he says one can "kefir" fruit or vegetable juice, water with any sweeetener you like, or rice milk, soymilk or nut milk. He says it works in any medium, though the grains dont rapidly multiply as they do in milk.
