  • Has anyone any experience with running costs of the new electric dual control 3 or 5 oven aga?

The stove manufacturer should be able to give you these figures, while you are at it check out the new Esse EL13 heatsource cooker.

Heats up very fast indeed, delivered my first one this week.

Also take a look at the Everhot range. Not strictly money saving territory but old fashioned 'last a lifetime' design and build quality. Owners love them
  • We installed a dual control electric AGA in June last year and I have just had the electricity bill recalculated based on a fresh meter reading. Based on 6 months experience, our electricity bill has increased by £24 per month (British Gas standard tariff) based on the following usage: The ovens are on half-power over night from about 9pm until 1pm the following day and on full power from 1pm for the evening meal. The ovens are on full more or less all day on Sundays. We use the hot plates when we need them but since they cycle on and off in about 8 minutes, they are on less often.

Since installing the AGA (our kitchen is large -- 14' x 15' and the house is on the big side) the kitchen and the rest of the house is much warmer than when we had a conventional cooker and we have had to move the thermostat for the central heating away from the AGA in order to ensure the central heating / towel rails come on twice a day.

I believe, therefore, that the over-all cost of heating the house has gone down (our gas bill has been decreased by £15 per month) but there are too many variables involved - including a warmer than usual winter - to make an accurate calculation.

To sum up, the dual control has been a pleasure to use, hasn't broken the fuel cost bank and is possibly the best household improvement we have every made.

    Thanks for the info.

Do you mind me asking what the total cost was, including installation.

!t seems clear enough to me. 32kw was used to cook a standard menu over the period of a week. If you want the figure in kwh, divide 32 by 168.

I'm not sure why you would find that funny or incredulous.

Unless you are being facetious, perhaps you could spell out to me exactly what that figure(32kW to cook a standard meal) means.

If it takes 32kW and the Aga is powered from a 240 volt source it will be drawing 133 amps.

Your suggestion to divide 32kW by 168 to get the figure in kWh means it will only use 0.19kWh(costing say 2 pence) to cook a standard menu for a week.

On second thoughts, you are joking!
  • We installed an electric dual control. After 6 months with the AGA on full for 7 or more hours a day and on half the rest of the time our electricity bill increased by £23 a month (British Gas - standard tariff). Its hard to judge the impact of running the AGA as described on our heating bills during such a mild winder (Hants south coast) but I can say that the gas bill is down considerably and we have had to move the thermostat for the central heating well away from the kitchen (which is in the centre of the house) to force the heating to come on twice daily. We are very impressed with the performance of our dual control and I would close by saying its one of the best home improvements we have ever made.
