Carrying on from that take the kids out for the day with the presents they did not want (!?!) with reciepts, get the refund then see what they want. that way they get what they want and you get a learning experience for next year.

I took my cousin the the pictures to see happy feet, he enjoyed it, and as it was the eve of christmas eve his parents enjoyed it too. his parents then got a free babysitter after christmas to go out with friends!

Tell 'em you don't have a receipt as you were merely recycling unwanted presents you had received the previous year :)
Then sneakily take the kids to one side and treat them, meal out or cinema or something.

  • This is why I ask my family members what they'd like to receive for Christmas (and birthdays).
They can then give me some choices and I can buy something for them that I know for certain is actually wanted :) .
No point in wasting time and money on unwanted gifts.

I would laugh and say ' do you know, for a minute I thought you were being serious!', and then just walk away - make her realise how insensitive she is.
  • I was asked by a relative I dont get on with particularly well for the receipt for her present because it wasnt suitable and she wanted to take it back.(This was about 15 years ago!)
I did feel really hurt at the time because I had thought long and hard about what to get and thought Id hit on a great idea, also Id spent a bit more than usual in order to get it too. I did give her the receipt though.
Its a tough one, you feel hurt if you put some effort into choosing something, but on the other hand I hate waste so I suppose its better that they have something they want and will use.
It was just another nail in the coffin of our relationship in the end though, because even though I tried hard not to be bothered about it, I cant summon up any enthusiasm for buying gifts for the said relative anymore, I have to admit I try to buy something that cant easily be taken back and always pay by credit card so she cant have the money back just an exchange.
I felt hurt that she couldnt see that I had put thought into the gift, and her gifts to me are usually totally thoughtless as well and either get recycled, donated to charity or ebayed.

liz - was it all the presents you had bought. i think you should ask your sis why so as not to make the mistake again. why not list what you bought for each child + their age and then we could let you know if your sis was just being unreasonable or not. i think the idea of taking them out for the day is a good one as sometimes the gift of time with a loved one is a far better present.

when we were younger my aunties used to get us utter crap for xmas and we just learned to live with it. it was usually tat from a market. when we were older we used to make our mum give them sugestions as to what to get us and now our presents are much better.

My sister used to buy me crap presents .

Cup & saucer in a box (never used )
    Battery tooth brush .

I use to give my 2 niece's money for there birthdays but they never acknowledged they received it .One day i asked my brother if they received it and he laughed and said it wasn't important . Now they get nothing .
  • What did you buy? Were they duplicates - was it all the presents she wants to return?
I'd feel quite crushed by it to be honest - I'd also like to know why? Does she want to take them back and get more for your money in the sales???
I'd get something cheap and cheerful in future from wilkos.
