Thanks for the update on this and well done for not being taken for a ride by Provident!
I was so concerned about this that I sent a message to the MSE team, I hadn't heard of this from Provident before and although you had the good sense to check out this deal before you committed yourself to even more debt, there must be many others who do not do so and who are being ripped off, as we speak.
Provident are very clever, their agents come to your home every week, they befriend you (and why not, most of them are very nice people, it's not them who make the company policy!) and you feel that you can trust them. I too, worked for Provident and they were a nice bunch of people to work with. But, there's no disguising the fact that the company preys on the most disadvantaged section of our society, those on benefits, those who don't have financial knowledge and those to whom £200 is a lot of money and a great help at Christmas, and so on. This is how they get away with charging huge amounts of interest and any Provident customer will tell you, it's so easy to get swept up in the "It's only another £5 per week" sales talk.
Buying up old SB debts is (to me) a new tactic and you can see how their customers will fall prey to it. A person you know, knocks on your door and tells you that you have hundreds of pounds of debts in your name which they will take care of, for just a few pounds a week? Many people will panic at the thought of more debts rearing their ugly head and would gladly pay their trusted Provi agent a few quid to make it go away. It's a disgusting practice and it should be outlawed.
OP, if any of your friends, neighbours or family are Provident customers, do warn them of this. Let us know what happens today with your agent, although remember, she's just touting the company line, I doubt she even knows about SB laws. Luckily, we know better than her!

Hi
Can I suggest that you get hold of your local MP and local councillors and explain what is going on. This is an absolute disgrace; turning SB debt into valid debt.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Hiya,

This rings so true. When she first told me about these debts, I did think OMG, she calls every few weeks ( i work shift work) I have to face her as I have to make my payments. This is going to be a lot harder, than shredding the letters. Then I thought, hang on. I did not ask provident to buy those debts. So went down the road I did.
Ras, Hiya thank you for reading and posting.
I agree it is so shocking. I bet they have got quite a few to pay up, because they knock on there door weekly and people will feel cornered.
Update todays visit.
Everything was hunky dory, she never mentioned anything about other debts. So just as she was leaving I said "did you pass on the information I gave you, to your boss. That you cannot collect on those debts as they are Statute Barred" Her reply was " He said the same as me, what is Statute Barred" When she explained he said "I have never heard of anything like that". He has not mentioned anything else to her about it.
At least now I know where the three debts are and will not be getting letters from other DCA. Unless of course, they in turn sell them on but I will be telling agent if they do and ask why they have sold on debts that cannot be collected ?
I think i may alter my Sig on these now

You did good, provident are the lowest. I doubt they will lend to you again in a hurry though.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

That may be a good thing.........keeps me out of trouble :money:.
We will see in about 4 months time, as one of my loans will be finished. She usually asks me if I would like a christma loan.........not this year, by my choice not theirs. I am going to be sorted early for christmas.

Good for you.....why give any more of your money to them? I'm not surprised your agent and her boss don't know anything about SB rules, and even if they do, they're not going to tell their customers!
Good luck with your debt-free journey, and again, well done for fending off the Provident sharks! :T"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
