Hi everyone. I've been saving my pennies for a while now and I would like to spend about £200 to £300 on a watch to treat myself! :D I was thinking of a Tag Heuer watch. Can anyone suggest whats the best place/deals online? Any other better watches that I can wear formal (e.g. at work) and and playing (e.g. on the golf course). FYI I'm a 27 y/o male! :D

My current watch is a Seiko Chronograph watch, that I bought for £100 10 years ago, and it still looks fab! :T

I've got 3 seiko watches 2 kinetics and 1 sportura , i got the sportura the one with the leather strap from a watch dealer the net and it looks superb.

Tag heuer watches are nice but you need to spend at least £1000 for a nice one.

My Tag is now 10 years old. They are more than worth their money. Don't accept any substitute!

If you are planning a holiday to the States or the Caribbean, then this is the place to buy. We have just returned from St Lucia with friends, and they both bought Tags. She bought the new pink diamond Tag that is advertised by one of the blonde tennis stars (sorry don't know her name) and he bought the new top of the range Kirium. Both were less than half UK price. They had no problem coming back into the UK as no Customs officers on duty!
  • The following web site has some great prices, it is based in LA (USA) so you will have to pay import duty, but still works out a lot cheaper (getting almost $2 to the £). I have used them to buy a Gucci watch a few years ago for my wife, excellent service and they are not fakes. In fact I emailed to say thanks and they put it on their customer testimonials page.

Andy -- it's your point which begs the question: what, precisely, is one paying for?

If it was the workmanship and build quality, then the price should be virtually the same in every market. But it isn't. My wife's Raymond Weil is one price in the UK, cheaper in Belgium, the same in Switzerland, less in Germany, almost half the price in the US, and 20% less in Italy. (These are all prices for watches from 'authorised dealers': not grey imports. And all tax and duty paid in country of origin).

I remember years ago being given a breakdown of a new perfume (whoops: 'parfums') brand. Thirty per cent of the retail was accounted for in the retailer margin; 10% royalty fee to the Hollywood actress after whom it was named but who could never have discerned the parfum's aroma anyway on account of a certain kind of nasal wear and tear; 60% to the manufacturer of which 5% was for the actual ingredients and production cost and the remaining 55% to finance the packaging (!) / cover the advertising, PR and promotions budget and still deliver a thumping great profit. On which basis, there was a fiver's worth of value in a £100 purchase. And the parfum was absolute carp, too.

Although a perfume comes weighted with all kinds of emotional baggage, so that a purchase is more than just the acquisition of a bag of crushed rose petals, I've never seen watches in the same light: it's the watch's design, workmanship and longevity arising from that workmanship which counts.

Hence my interest in that hitherto unknown British watchmaker referred to earlier in this thread. He seems not to want to make his purchasers bear the cost of sponsoring the Olympic Games, or hiring A List celebs to pose for magazine spreads. He seems just to want to make, and sell, watches. How refreshing!

Thanks for your message! Yes I plan to keep the Seiko Chronograph, but its quite 'dressy' and I thought I could do with not wearing the same watch everyday anymore since I've worn it everyday for 10 years! :D I guess I would like something with a tough/good build that I can pose in :rotfl:

I just bought one for my brother's 50th b'day in Goldsmiths using Tesco vouchers - I got £480 off which is £120 in Tesco vouchers - brilliant saving if you are a T customer. Also I think you can buy the vouchers on E-bay. I bought my oh one about 15 years ago and he has never had any bother with it- go for one of the automatics if you can - its a bit more expensive but you dont need to worry about batteries or winding ever again.
  • Save your Tesco clubcard vouchers and get one form Goldsmiths!!!

You could easily get £1000 of deal vouchers buy june!!

Have a look at https://www.rltwatches.co.uk - a UK watchmaker who actually makes his own watches - he's got a good range of his own and also sells some other brands. Not affiliated apart from being a happy customer.

codger: I can highly recommend Christopher Ward watches - if you search google you'll find a forum dedicated to them and when I emailed the company with a couple of questions I got a reply from Christopher Ward himself, which is great customer service if you ask me! I got a

and I love it - glad I didn't spend any more.

Also when I ordered the code 25OFF took £25 pounds off! (Not sure if this still works)
  • My mum got me a Tag Heuer diamond and steel watch last christmas from Beaverbrooks. She is great at negotiating and got it down from £1750 to £1250 by paying cash!! The same watch is now £2050 and I love it - go for it you will feel really special every time you look at it. Mind has never been taken off and has had some hammer building sandcastles on the beach etc with the kids but is as unscratched as when I first put it on.
  • I am looking for a Tag myself. Its DHs 40th birthday in March and he has his eye on a £995 one. he has had a Tag that he spent £350 on about 15 years ago, and it is one of his most prized possesions.

So dont be put off by other's comments, if you want to treat yourself, go for it!

I was looking in Jewellers windows on Wednesday and most Jewellers that sell Tags had three or four in the sale, some with decent reductions.
I also asked in Costco. They had some Ladies Tags (its my 40th in September!!), but the lady said they may get more mens Tags in the New Year.

Good luck hunting for your dream watch and I hope you enjoy it!
