....When wages are not going up and people have lost their jobs, how the hell are you expected to cope with such steep food price rises in the span of a year?
The same way people have coped throughout the centuries ;) Cutting their coat according to their cloth.

There's a thread running about the 1980's, things of a similar nature were happening then too. So, after the news stories of rising prices, unemployment etc., next came the TV programmes to teach people how to be more frugal.

Anyone remember "Bazaar" with Nerys Hughes?

Back a further decade, the '70's when the UK was a nation of strikes?

Back a little more ... World War II; World War I; the depression?

    We survived; clearly :)

I shop at Aldi and it is getting cheaper. Most vegetables are 39p, I admit I don't eat much butter, bread or pasta. A bottle of diet lemonade is about 20p so if someone is paying £78p at Tesco there are massive savings to be made.

Sadly no Aldi up here, we do have Lidl but TBH I don't find it hugely cheaper than Tesco, especially when you count the club card points and compare the quality on certain things. Our F and V always seems to go off so quickly, not sure if it is something to do with the long road/sea journey to get here!

I have £100 to spend on 4 of us this coming month. I don't know how I will do it. 2 adults, 1 child of 4 and a baby. I need packed lunches for us all daily too.

My question is, will aldi be cheaper than tesco for basic storecupboard ingredients? We don't buy "junk" and I cook from scratch. I don't want to waste fuel going to Aldi only to find I could get it as cheap in Tesco (value is what I normally get) plus clubcard points to then trapse over there wasting more fuel.

    You answers are greatly appreciated.
    Debt - CCV £3792
CCB £1383 (took a hit for a holiday)

    Loan 1 £1787
    Loan 2 £1683
    Total £8601 Was £39302

I shop in aldi quite a lot, for fruit and veg, drinks, meat etc. They are a bit limited on herbs and spices (for instance my local doesn't stock bay leaves which are a storecupboard staple for me) but a good range of tinned goods, etc. Fruit juice is cheaper in sainsburys or asda though.
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

    Thank You.

That's it you see - if I am going to have to go to two shops it's not worth my while as can get all under one roof from Tesco and the value products IMO, are just as nice.

    In 2 minds still......

We were hosting a garden party to celebrate my eldest leaving Primary school last night so I didn't see any tv. Sounds interesting though. Could I watch it on catch-up do you think?

Erdd2 it's seems to be when I miss a shop there for a couple of weeks. Today I got another £7.00 off a £50.00 voucher shop and another £12.00 off an £80.00 shop in the same churn out of vouchers. The £80.00 is not happening so that voucher went binwards - the other one I shall use again next week.

The lady on the tills told me that she has a few where they don't even generate a voucher! As I say I missed two weeks of shopping there so I am wondering if that could be it!
I'm not loyal to any of them, I go to different ones each week, based on what I want to get and what I'm doing time-wise. Recently though 2 nearby nettos were converted into Asda/Morrisons and the local Tesco became dead, and for a few weeks sometimes you got a voucher generated at the end of your shopping but not always. A cashier revealed to my mate that they were only being generated if you only spent a little bit - to encourage you to go back and buy more. My mate seperated her shopping. :T:D

I think Lidl has gotten greedy, the last time I shopped there I was horrified by my bill but didn't have any choice on that particular day. I shop at Aldi's for most things but use Morrisons or Sainsbury's for their basic range (Morrisons coleslaw at 20p is lovely, Sainsbury's basic teabags at 30p are amazing).

To answer the question about is Aldi cheaper (asked by debtfree2012) it really depends what you buy. If you stick to their Super 6 fruit and veg mostly, their branded bread is 75p (or their own is 47p), 4 pints of milk is 79p and their pasta, tomato pasta sauce are all good prices as are the chicken quarters (99p for 2, so its cheaper buying 2 packs of them than one chicken and use for pies, risotto, roasts etc), mince and sliced ham.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

Don't panic! Before going shopping try to do a food plan for the month check what you have in your cupboards and freezer, you will be surprised just how much you really have got, then write a list of the things that you will need to buy weekly (fresh foods)
have a look at the cheap meals threads in the old style indexed threads

Buy a couple of chickens and stretch them out to do a roast on one day, a curry, stew, pie or stir fry the next day the same goes for joints of meat. i buy a joint of beef, roast it and slice it and there is usually enough to do 2 meals for four people easily, I also buy gammon and again roast it and slice it up to use as ham for sandwiches and that is enough for a whole month - maybe the joints will have to wait for when you have enough in the bank for extras though.
Here is a good site that may help with a few cheap recipes
    http://thirty-quid.blogspot.com/
shop in Aldi if you can - They really are the cheapest, and have stewing steak at £1.99 a pack this week, a whole chicken is £2.99, a small joint of gammon is £2.99, 2 large gammon seaks are £1.49 and are plenty for four when cut in half, or you could make a carbonara, risotto or ham and egg pie with them, eggs are £1.25 for 15 and the super six this week is salad potatoes, courgettes, plums, peaches/nectarines, peppers and vine tomatoes all for 69p
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Food prices are not really going up. The currency is losing value. I've been tracking the pound against two precious metals and two strong currencies for the past three years. It's sinking badly.
