i think a lot of us, regardless of what side of the pond we're on will be forced to revert to 'old fashioned' ways of doing things as the world economies continue to plummet. the really difficult thing is, what if you're already doing most of those things... then where do you?:(
I cant imagine a world where everyone uses tumble driers.
Think of all that extra ironing work just to 'save time'.0 -

in the victorian era in cities there were a number of "leftover" and "scrap" shops where hotels and restaurants would sell their leftovers and scraps to the owners, who would then sell them on to other poeple. there were also loads of cookbooks about how to use these scraps. perhaps a return to this would be good?!0

That makes me weep for the planet! All that unnecessary electricity usage, and unnecessary manufacturing to keep up with demand.
I don't have a tumble drier (no space) or a garden/balcony, so everything is hung up inside, and we've never had a problem with that in the 2 and a half years we've been in the flat.
I watched extreme couponing last night also, and now can not fathom how anyone is starving in the US. Surely the food banks should be extreme couponing too?
Although, I have to say that there were a fair number of overweight families doing it too, and I don't think it's good for their health. They are eating too much, whilst others don't have enough.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Bonnie cheese was something I lived in at Uni which has now become a luxury.. I read a lot of frugal blogs and for the last 3 days have been living off a split pea soup I made after reading one blog. Blogger makes enough for 8 meals in a slow cooker but I have had 4 meals and flatmate had 2 bowls out of half a packet..am going to start to do this about once a fortnight or so - added to repertoire along with my value noodles with extra spicesWhat Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

I was treated to a toby carvery roast dinner last week and saw the chef/carver get a new freshly cooked turkey from the kitchen and just chuck the older one into the bin! It still had loads of meat on it and could have fed us for a week at least!!!! They must be throwing away so much meat over the course of a day, it didn't even get to the kitchens for stock for the gravies! I had to bite my tongue I was so shocked! My dh just laughed as he is often amazed at my os ways but it was the way I was brought up. When are they going to wake up to the fact that this kind of waste is senseless?
Years ago I worked in a canteen for a large company in offices in Leeds. I was dishwashing so would see the plates of leftovers, Plates filled with food. Guys who would buy a main course leave half of it and then get a pudding and leave most of that as well.. jeez if youre not hungry dont get a pud.. we would send plates of biscuits for meetings that would come back totally untouched and we were not allowed to put them back in the tin. i actually wept after my first day to think of all the waste and starving people in the world. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Cooked meals like soups and stews and bread and bread rolls, to be served at the drop in centre, especially in the winter.
Even if only a few supermarkets and restaurants got involved, it could make such a difference to the wastage of food and people going hungry.
Could be run by local councils. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
I always laugh when I see people paying for frozen ice cubes
<<<<<whisper>>>>> I've been known to buy themI'm parial to a G&T and like LOTS of ice. THe only reason I don't any more is that they take up a lot of space in the freezer that is best put to other uses, so i make them now *PROUD*:rotfl:
