Capital one log in

Hi All,

For those of you with a capital one credit card, I wanted to ask: is the website asking for 'security' information when you log in? I just tried to check my account and it is basically asking for all personal information, including ATM pin and the three digit security code - this is what has sent my alarm bells ringing.

I am worried that either the site has been hacked, or if there is perhaps a virus on my computer? But having logged into other accounts, there is nothing funny popping up and my computer does have virus protection/rapport.

I think I will call them and ask. Just be careful everyone.

just logged in for you, no security issues. even if they were, they would never ask for THOSE details.

ps. when this happened to my rbs account, the laptop still wont work due to trying to remove the problem, so be careful what you use to clean your system too, no dual-running anti virus software!

No problems here either and they would NEVER ask for those details.

    Run a scan with Malwarebytes.

Or here sounds dodgy to me ..
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)
  • I've had a Capital One card for over a year now, never needed more than username and password to login, sounds dodgy.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

It's working as normal for me, just username and password. OP's experience sounds very suspicious.

@proeleche - How are you accessing the Capital One website? If you're clicking a link in an email, that could take you somewhere that looks like Capital One, but isn't. If you're using a Favourite or Bookmark, even that may have been compromised. Access your account by typing https://www.capitaloneonline.co.uk into your browser. If it's still asking from PIN and CVN, try a different computer. No bank or credit card company will ever ask for PIN and CVN to log in.

DON'T click the link I've provided above. I could have doctored the link to take you somewhere inappropriate! I haven't, but why should you trust me? You must type in the URL, in full, ignoring any stored previously used URL that your browser may offer you.

A few of our customers have reported receiving hoax emails claiming to be from Capital One, MasterCard® or VISA. (This is generally known as 'Phishing'). These emails typically contain a link to a hoax web site and attempt to trick customers into supplying confidential personal information such as account numbers, PIN numbers and passwords. Some of the emails claim that your account will be closed unless you confirm confidential personal information or update security details. These are not genuine emails from Capital One, MasterCard® or VISA. Capital One, MasterCard® or VISA will never send emails to customers requesting confidential information e.g. card number, PIN number, card expiry date, mother's maiden name, Internet account User ID & password.

    • To ensure a secure connection to our web site, only ever use Secure Messages to contact us online
    • If you think you've received a hoax email, please forward it to abuse@capitalone.com
    • If you are concerned that you may have divulged your confidential personal information or if your Capital One security details have been compromised, please call us immediately on freephone 0800 952 5267 at any time. From outside the UK, call us on +44 115 993 8002.
    • Check your statements carefully for any fraudulent activity on your card, and report any suspicious activity as soon as possible. Call us on 0800 952 5458 at any time.
All the above is from Capital One's FAQs. I think the OP knows all this, so it's just for general awareness of phishing scams and to emphasise the second bullet point about forwarding hoax emails.

    Hi All,

I wasn't clicking on a link from an email, I was going directly to the capital one website from my laptop at home. It was asking for the security information after I had logged in: just a box popping up and basically not letting me use the website's functions.

The fact it was asking for my pin and security code and my mother's maiden name etc, indicated to me right away that it was some sort of phishing scam - I didn't inser any information. I've called capital one and their fraud department are going to call me later today.

I've been able to log into my account from work without any problems, and all the activity on the account is mine. Does this mean there is some malware on my laptop at home? I ran avast and anti-malwayre (separately) last night, and both came back clean. Any advice?

You might have a compromised hosts file. Try http://217.169.160.70 which is the IP of capitalone. If it is the hosts that is at fault then that will work. Might also be your dns server has been set to a mal one. You most likely have a rootkit which has control of your PC and has disabled the AV. I'd suggest you look to boot from CD or USB with a clean AV scan system.

i had this the other day logging into my RBS account and it was my comp that had been infected with a virus so i cancelled my online banking totally and ended up reinstalling windows on my comp coz it had a few problems.

ive now set it all back up and have completely new log in details and ive changed all my passwords for everything just in case.
