Hi, thanks for update. The CCleaner sure worked a treat. I think I've pretty well done OK with everything. Having said that, I can't crack the start up mode. Still starts in selective and gives me a message each reboot or start up to change to standard - then it won't let me without being the Administrator. And... still won't accept any changes if I try within msconfig but if I try with services.msc I seem to get a different start-up list to that within msconfig so I'm not sure what I'm looking for..help!
Anyway, hopefully more may be revealed within the revised log- the only obvious thing (to me, anyway) that did shown up was three PUPDEALio TB entries after the full Malwarebytes scan - deleted those.

You were right - I can now paste a link, hooray! Cheers for now, Sal0 -
Are you using XP pro? If you go into MSCONFIG, and change the startup to Normal, it should go back to normal. It might complain a bit but it shouldn't annoy you on restart.
The PUP.Dealio means "potentially unwanted program", presumably the Dealio/Spigot toolbar that was on Internet Explorer.
Don't worry so much about the services.msc, it was just the alternative method to using MSCONFIG for SERVICES (O23s) if you were following Closed's guide.
Plenty more to disable via CCleaner's startup manager. There's not a lot that needs to stay other than DLA really. Can keep the Filehippo updater running automatically, but better IMO to check manually. You should be able to safely disable all these; if you have any trouble, then just re-enable them:

Cheers Russ, I'll go back through that lot and uninstall. I'm just running XP on my desktop, still that darned mode thing wouldn't let me change it. However, after last reboot I didn't get the error message on start-up so maybe it will settle down. Thanks so much for your help, Sal

No don't uninstall, just disable the Startups!
'Startups' just means programs that are set to run automatically each time you start Windows. This is a big problem when just about every program wants to start up, because it means you're running them whether or not you're even using them.
When you disable a startup, you just stop the program running at boottime - thus freeing up resources for the programs you manually choose to run.
This is a picture of the CCleaner startup manager:

Whoops, sorry to worry you, I meant disable - not uninstall!!! Thank you for you very clear clarification though, most kind.

Hi, any ideas how I can retrieve my Brother printer function? I'm not sure at what stage it must have been disabled somehow, but I don't have it in my list of programmes anymore and I have no print facility. If I try 'Find Printer' in Word it comes up saying that the Directory Service is unavailable. I no longer have the install CD unfortunately - I did go to the Brother site and tried the download for the MFC-640CW but after it appears to download, I get a window entitled ZIP Self-Decompression, there is then an option to Decompress(X) or cancel. I did try Decompress, I then got a message saying the process was successful, but, the screen then clears and I appear to have no new programme installed anywhere. Doh, confused.......Sal0

when you unzip the downloaded file it will extract it to a folder. You probably didn't note the destination folder. It will be somewhere - possibly a Temp folder. I suggest you unzip the downloaded file again, follow it carefully and you should see an option for the destination folder (i.e where you want the unzipped file(s) to go). Change the destination to Desktop or your Documents folder.604!0
