Loads of programs running, and loads of toolbars. I'll go through your log properly in a minute, there'll be a lot you can trim here

Are you still using the university to connect to the net? Are you still with AOL?0 -
Hi
I had the same problem when I bought ba flat screen monitor for my old pc. After asking on a forum I was advised that the computer is struggling with memory as the new monitor is taking more effort t run than the old monitor.
Although I can use Firefox and IE as the mood takes me, sometimes I use K-Meleon, which uses a lot less memory. See link here:-
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/
Also click Start, then enter msconfig.
Go to the startup tab and delete the programs that are starting automatically. Some you need (Microsoft ones and security) but some are Ok to untick. I use Dropbox for online storage, but didn't need it starting up every time. Other similar programs will fall in to this category too.0 -
Hi again Russ, nope, finished with Uni now so won't need that and no longer with AOL. Cheers, Sal0
-
Well the main reason for IEXPLORE to be slow is the gazillion toolbars and browser help objects
I'll ignore Rapport for the moment.
In Hijackthis, TICK and FIX this item:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DK
I would definitely uninstall PDFForge as it has a poor reputation. I'm not a fan of Conduit toolbars, so would get rid of the Conduit toolbar/Translator combo (unless you are attached to the translation bar). Other toolbars that can safely go: Google, Yahoo, Skype, Java, Windows Live, HP Smart Web. You should be able to uninstall these via Add/Remove, if not let me know and I'll give an alternative. Getting rid of these toolbars will make a big difference.
Uninstall AOL.
After that, the list of programs that run on startup is huge. First run StartupLite and accept all the changes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/startuplite
Then run CCleaner, and go into Tools >Startup, then go in and start disabling some of those startups. None of them seem necessary. At worst, just re-enable a specific item if you have trouble, it won't be a huge deal.
I would uninstall SuperantiSpyware, and just use the portable version for manual scans. There's no need for it to start with Windows IMO. http://www.superantispyware.com/sasportable.php
Lastly I'd uninstall Java unless you have a program that needs it. It's a security risk for sure, and most people don't even use it. Adobe Reader is badly out of date and again is a huge security risk - I'd uninstall, then upgrade to Adobe X, or use a safer alternative such as PDFXchange, Foxit (without the toolbar), Sumatra, Nitro, etc. You can use the FileHippo Update Checker to see what else is out of date: http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/0 -
Can do some quick Malwarechecks as well:
http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro (usually quick)
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe (usually quick)
http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm (quick if you say no to definitions, but otherwise does a longer avast scan, which isn't a bad thing in your case)
After all this, restart the computer and see how it feels, then post a new Hijackthis log.0 -
Hey Russ, my sincere thanks for this, you are an absolute star! I have to go out in a minute but I will devote the time later this afternoon to work right through this. Cheers, Sal0
-
Hi Russ, have been working through your suggestions and getting on very well. 2 questions to date: I have uninstalled Java - I think- but there are 4 updates with different numbers still showing in Add/Remove, just remove these 4 also?
Secondly, when I try to uninstall SuperAntiSpyware, I am getting a message reading "error reading uninstall data". Is there another way to go about removing this?
That's the lot removed now, just got the Malware checks to do. I'll wait for your suggestion re the above, run the Malware checks in the morning and then post a new log. Thanks so much Russ, goodnight. Sal0 -
try this http://www.superantispyware.com/downloads/SASUNINST.EXE
or
reinstall superantispyware, and then uninstall
The best way of cleaning up a slow or badly infected machine is to backup all your data to an external drive, and do a factory restore using the factory restore partition (see manual or manufacturers website) or Windows disc. The alternative is to do it manually as follows (the list may look daunting, but should take less than an hour of effort (apart from virus scans)) :-

If you are posting because the machine is slow and haven't done so already, post your physical ram total, commit charge total, commit charge peak by doing CTRL ALT DEL, Task manager, performance - after virus infections this is the principle reason a machine goes slow so this information is important to help you
This is a general guide on cleaning up infections and speeding up pc's https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
If you know you have just been infected, with a fake antivirus for example, running system restore to a previous restore point is often the fastest way of getting your machine working again
Making any changes to a PC setup always comes with a slight risk of something going wrong, the worse case scenario is an unbootable PC - ideally you should have got a backup of important data on dvd or external disk, and a disk image backup (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) or windows disc/factory restore partition available before you start. In the unlikely event that anything does go wrong, post on another pc for advice.

If you suspect an infection, here are some other virus scanners to try, let them fix anything found

Go into the connection settings of all your browsers, and remove the proxy entry (IE Tools, internet options, connections/firefox tools, advanced, network, settings etc), the entry below is usually a sign or remnants of an infection causing browser redirection. Note proxy settings for browsers other than IE don't show up in hijackthis logs, so check them manually
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = wwwcache.port.ac.uk:81
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
************************************************
Scanning with all the scanners above along with your resident scanner should remove most or all infections if there are any present on your machine, below is some specific (optional) advice based on your log which may help to improve speed and tidy things up.

When you've done all that, post a fresh hijackthis log and any logs of infections!!

Hi there, huge thanks for all the advice here, very kind.
Question: I have selected a variety of items to be disabled in msconfig, but when I click on Apply, I get an Access Denied message, asking me to log on as Administrator...? I don'y quite know what that means and how it applies to a home desktop.
Also, I am unsure what start up mode I should be in. At the moment I seem to be in Selective mode (as opposed to Normal). If I try and change mode to Normal, I get the same Access Denied message as above.
Any ideas? Thanks, Sal0 -
You can use the startup manager in Ccleaner instead of msconfig:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/portable
And it's better to disable services using services.msc rather than msconfig (i.e. Windows key + R to get Run dialog, then type services.msc and enter)
That way you don't get the administrator warning with MSCONFIG.
Uninstall all old versions of Java that you see.
When you're done with all changes, feel free to post another hijackthis log so any other bits are more obvious. You'll likely be able to post links now so don't need pastebin
