As for the 16mb connection offered by Sky, you mush remember thats UP TO 16mb, if your phone line will only support 5mb that's the best you'll get.
It's all about luck isn't it, some people will find some ISP's rubbish and others will have no problems at all. I think to call Sky, NTL and Tiscali all rubbish isn't really helping anyone on this thread, maybe you could suggest an ISP yourself?

I'm starting to turn blue in the face from referring people to the ADSLguide forums and saying that IDNet and Zen are considered the best isp's (I'm an IDNet customer).
Of course not everyone will have problems with an isp, but you do find a high % of people have 1 or more issues with Sky, ntl, Tiscali, Aol etc i.e. throttled connection, awful customer service, unstable connection. However, you must also remember that there will be a hell of a lot of people out there who don't even know what a throttled connection is and therefore don't know they have a problem. Hence, they may say the isp is great.
But it all goes back to my words to live by: "You get what you pay for." If your paying £10 a month for 8mb BB, it would be a little nieve to expect top notch connection, customer service etc.0 -
I am with AOL on the Silver package and pay £9.99 per month.
I was paying £17.99 per month but thanks to other posters on this site I realised I could get a better deal. I rang AOL and they immediately offered me the £9.99 deal.

But not everyone is a heavy user and has restrictions on their budget as well. If the setup has been done properly and if then there are problems it could also be due to the phone line being poor (a BT issue I had on mine), the computer having issues or that BT has problems at their exchanges which has nothing to do with the providers as the lines belong to BT and they are just piggy backing on top of the BT line.
When I was with AOL I got a BT modem. I had no problems at all with AOL and was with them for 4 years. I then swapped to BT as they offered me a really good deal and I am now leaving them for Sky as I have nothing but problems and also to save some money in the long run saving me £20 per month. This is really weird as the line with AOL and BT is absolutely the same. As I already have a Sky package I make a good saving.
Sky, TalkTalk and Orange will have teething problems, no major new launch would ever go smoothly. Their staff get abused by frustrated customers and one can loose it at both ends. I know, I used to be a support person on the phones, sometimes you give back what you get on the phone. Its not professional but one has the boss in the neck to get the call sorted as quickly as possible and a long queue waiting for support it can be very stressfull, add overtime and shifts and things just will slide. There are just too many variables the new startups have no control over. So its all about patience and also a good IT friend
to get things working. Thats why I waited a while once the dust of the launch has settled until I go in and be part of it.
If money was no option I would probably go for one of the providers mentioned in the guide but I cannot and don't want to pay out of my nose. Lets be truthfull here, how often do you call the support teams? AOL I called 2 times (due to me and the kids messing up the PC) in 4 years, BT I called about 6 times in the last 18 months due to their lines dropping and exchange issues (and their tech centre in India is a total joke). And anyway, some of the small companies are here now or disappear or get bought up by bigger players in the end anyway. This has happened to my cheap phone calls provider. They are now at their third buyout/buy-in without letting their customers know of the new name when sending out bills or just helping themselves to my CC details on file.
And who hangs out on the boards? People who have problems with their connections, not those who had no problems at all. They are the ones with all the horror stories.
I will keep you posted on the Progress of my Sky installation. I opted for their tech people to do it for me. Lets see how it goes.0 -
Zen have gone down of late, there unlimited service was only applicable for old legacy customers over recent months, now even legacy customers like myself will be capped from the 1st March, its a generous cap compared with many however you do pay £35 per month for that privage.0

I am with Ukonline for £14.99 - its good, unlimited ( fair use applies) and stable for the last year on an unbundeled exchange. HTH0

I agree totally.
Last year I signed myself up to e7, then I signed my dad up too. June-ish this year they went "nipples vertical" - CC paid us both back, but they were unlimited downloads for £120 per year (payment in advance - bad plan).
When they worked, they were great...but the C.S. was tragic.
With ndo/names now and couldn't tell you what the C.S. is like as I havn't needed to call them - I got a "£60 connection, free for a year" deal (so £5 a month) - 512 downloads (rear-end of nowhere and at the very end of the exchange) and only 2 gb limit, but i struggle to use it most of the time. XBOX live was fine and I have a kind friend with 75gig limit if i really need something.

Totally untrue, check out the IDNet forum on ADSLguide. Although there has been a slight problem of late with high pings, most people on there post for advice i.e. "what router should I get". IDNet = happiness online. I've been with Aol, ntl, freeserve, pipex and they were all a bunch of idiots!0 -

Have to disagree there - it is a simple fact that on a site like this you will get far more people complaining about a product/supplier than praising it. Simple human nature, I'm afraid ! Most people don't use "the IDNet forum on ADSLguide".
I see lots of people complaining about PlusNet - I have no complaints; I see lots of people complaining about BT for line rental - I have no complaints; I see lots of people complaining about XP/Firefox/Fords/The Weather ...............................................0 -

Yes, but if there were no problems they would still hang out on the boards wouldn't they? You don't just come on here when you have a problem, you come on to see if you can answer anyone else's problem. Same thing applies @ ADSLguide, just cos you don't have a problem doesn't mean you don't visit the site anymore! And when there are no problems being posted you find other things to discuss. It just so happens that the Aol's, ntl's etc continually have problems with a high % of their customers. At no point have I said that everyone on an isp has problems!
Group hug everyone, can't we all just get along!
