I'm not aware that becoming homeless cancels all your debts? Although obviously the chance of them collecting is somewhat reduced-so inevitably they will sell the debt on for what they can get for it. If you become housed again within 6 years (I hope so) the DCA can still pursue you.

Your lucky you have a home, you have missed the point here. Thanks anyways.

    1. To be fair, he hasnt missed the point in your original post and is 100% correct to say that you still owe the money and the company
in no way has to put off payment - after all you OWE them that money! It's theirs...you used the gas/ele, you need to pay for it, unfortunately.
    2. However, if you have no home, then I agree that you have bigger things to worry about right now. You'll just need to accept the fact that you will
be chased for the money until you pay. In the mean time, contact Shelter and sort a roof over your head.
  • Can you get benefits when you have no fixed abode? Genuine question, btw, really don't know.

    - s/he's going to the sally-bash in St Helens or maybe a house / flat with the sally-bash housing association.

Surely if the OP hasn't got a home address for the debt-collection agency to visit how are they going to recover any money owed.

Quite frankly OP I would suggest finding a home and feeding yourself a higher priority than finding money you perhaps haven't got to pay an energy company.

Let them wait and get a roof over your head first.

    Good luck.

What do you have to do to get through to these people at Scottish Power customer services?

I said i am now homeless with no address, they responded by saying thanks for your email, this will make no difference in the amount owed and a debt collection agency will be informed to collect it - could they not just hold payments until i can afford to pay???

And their rep on this forum is useless too, she doesn't even respond to emails even when shes asked you to email her LOL

I give up, i told Scottish Power i have had enough of their customer services and to do what they must, good luck to them with the debt collections too i think i got more important things to pay for.

All in all, the Scottish Power experience is like a nightmare, one big, messed up, confusing, rude and arrogant nightmare.

should they just take your word for this?

    - don't be too angry with SP, I'm with SP and at the moment I'm paying for the electricity you used

No you aren't. You are paying for the energy YOU have used. SP will set debt collectors onto the OP if they deem it correct to do so. They debt they ran up is completely nothing to do with you.

You are however paying the 10.5 MILLION POUND salary of the Scottish Power chief executive. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/8583543/Scottish-Power-chairman-has-pay-package-doubled.html

So .. .. who is paying the remaining 90% of Widelats debt plus accrued interest costs ?

SP will have sold the account for about 10% of value, Widelats will eventually pay several hundred if not thousand percent of its original value.

All companies make provision for debt write-offs and some will even insure against this, so in effect, minimal cost to the other customers. Also, I suspect the yearly interest on SP's cash holdings would cover all bad debts, so really no-one pays. If you really want to feel that you are paying and are furious about this, then if the OP has a debt of (pulling a figure out of the air) 2 grand, then out of the 5.3 million UK customers of SP, you would each pay something like 0.0003p.

So what ?, I don't care if its a fraction of a penny - its my penny the O/P is stealing !

""" insure against this """ - who pays the insurance against these defaults - I / we do !

""" so really no-one pays """ - grow up and talk sense, corner shop or megga-corporation the penny counters maintain the profit margin !

""" interest on SP's cash holdings """ - its part of the business model, take £50k out via your idea and we, the honest ones who pay, will be made to replace it !

By your analysis vuvuzela, its ok not to pay your bills. The O/P is whining because he has had the benefit of the goods and services but does not want to enter into an agreement to pay for them. This is a massively welfare orientated state if the leccy bill has gone west so has the council tax / housing benefit / etc. Times are hard but no one goes under the breadline unless they have different and exotic priorities with their spending, and that's being benevolent enough to assume its the O/P's first time !

Give me your postcode and I'll pop round later and steal the car off your drive, it will be ok, I know you won't mind .. .. .. after all its insured, it will only cost 0.0000000000000000000003p each when shared between the rest of the driving population.

    - I hope you've got no claims bonus cover :D
    - - oh hang on, yes you paid extra up front for the no claims bonus loss cover
    - - - still you won't mind will you ?

The good taxpayer pays for the non-taxpayer
The good motorist pays for the bad motorist
The good insured pay for the uninsured
The good tenant pays for the Chav

The working population pays for everything consumed and used by every single person who inhabits this island, and they do so all of their whole entire working life. That includes ' duck ponds / 2nd homes & Prono channels '
