Before you go and spend any money check to see if you can get anything from Social Work or an NHS Occupational Therapist (OT). I got support rails for the bath from a Social work OT and the NHS OT gave me a bed rail to help with getting out of bed and a portable support frame for the toilet.

How do you contact them? I remember the DLA ATOS home visit doc mentioning something about them but then she never gave me any info on it:D

    Hi, Victory
My GP put me in touch with the Social Work OT and she made a home visit to see what might help. The bath rails were fitted a week or so later. The NHS OT in my area (North East Scotland) is part of a rehab team including a physiotherapist. It might not be the same where you are but I think your GP might be a good place to start.

When I go to the doc what do I ask for? Is it called a home referral? Or an OT visit? What do I ask for?

I looked the other day in a mobility shop for the bed guard and it was £59.99 cannot afford that so was wondering if there was any help out there to get one ,it would help me a lot, the toilet grabber my OH made up one himself, it does the job but is not like one should be but it was free and as for a commode which was £19.99 my OH also got a stainless steel bowl saving the money again

An assessment is worth having because there are a range of aids on the market and the OT should know which ones are best for you and your problems. My parents ended up buying a stairlift because of the long wait for a grant but the OT's advice meant that they got one that suited Mum's needs. Without the advice, they wouldn't have chosen so well.

Victory, just explain the problems you're having to your GP and ask if you can be referred to an OT for assessment of aids you might need. My OT brought one type of toilet support frame which did not suit so it was taken away and she then brought a different style. Maybe I'm lucky, my GP is very supportive and my area has a rehab support team for people with neurological conditions like mine (I have MS).

I hope you get some help soon.

i use culinare one touch can openers and jar openers , bought very cheaply on sale from amazon
if you need an assistance alarm for indoors ,, DONT buy a dissability product for over £50 , buy a wireless doorbell ( esentially the same thing ) i got one with 2 ringers annd a flashing light from wilkos for £5 disability shop wanted £55 .. all i did was add a lanyard to the push button part ,, if i need help i just push the button and everyone in the house knows to come n help me
ive become quite adept at saving money by adapting non disability items @ a very low cost rather than pay through the nose for "proper , vat free disability "items
feel free to pm me if you need any help
some items for wheelchairs can be adapted from pushchair /bicycle accessories ie ,, mothercare cup holder £7 Approx , wheelchair one almost £30
i made my own walking stick bags for my scooter using faux leather fabric and velcro and saved myself another £50 , made my own padded seat cover aswell another £40 saved ( paid less than £5 per meter for the faux leather from the range , if you cant sew use permanent double sided tape to hold them together ,, works a treat )

if you can get to a t j hughes , they are clsoing down ,, buy some dr cook sauce pans , they have them for under £5 @ the moment each and they have special handles for arthritic hands ,, i love mine

i also made my own chunky cutlery , i filled bicycle handles with expanding diy foam and while it was still tacky shoved in some cheapo knives and forks , i saved over £25 on those 2 alone

home bargains also have folding walking sticks for £2.50 . same ones from disability shop are £20 vat free
and a long arm grabber £1.99 home bargains around £20 from disability stores

Deefin, you sound very inventive. Wilkinsons sound like a great place to shop but I don't think we have any near me.
