Orange Roaming Charges - HTC Desire in Turkey

Options
I was on holiday in Turkey last week.

We had 2 smart phones with us.

I decided that I'd ring Orange and get a bundle so I could surf the net. The person I spoke to advised me on a £15 bundle for 10mb's worth which she said would cover hundreds of web pages.

3 days later and about 2 hours of reading text based web pages on the net I get a call from Orange telling me I have charges currently of £750.

I told them there's no chance in hell i'm paying that and would sort the issue in court.

My phone has been knocked off the network.

Tomorrow I will ring them and try to get to the bottom of this.

Is there any advise people can give or experiences to share to help me get out of these charges?

I am serious though, at this stage I would go to court as surely they'd see sense and see I was incorrectly informed and also that these charges are insane.

Any help guys -- worried!

Did you tell the CSR that you were already there ?

As I have a feeling you need to enable these bundles before you travel ? Once you're there, you're already using the service as a roamer.

Did they specifically tell you you'd be able to use the bundle in Turkey? If not there's probably not a lot you can do, other than plead with them to cut the charges (they may reduce the charge - people here have managed to get networks to reduce these rip-off charges).

The EU have been clamping down on roaming rip-offs, but unfortunately as Turkey isn't in the EU that's no use to you.
  • I rang Orange from Turkey

    Got the £15 package

Was told it would be OK for hundreds of web pages

    Turned roaming on

Roamed for about 3 hours over 4 days.

Got a call from Orange telling me I've spent £750.

I told them to knock my phone off the networks compleltely and told them I'd there's no way I would be paying any more than my £15 bolt on.

But could do with advise or any help as I'm going to sort it this week.
  • Hi,

The exact same thing has happened to me with orange, although i do have an i phone 4.

i got back from turkey mid june. and saw i had a bill for £715 pound, £600 pound of it was roaming charges.

i have made 6 calls to orange sent letters and emails regarding the bill, and only by the last call did i get any sence. I spoke to someone called Jim who was very helpful, unlike many of the others in the call centre.

id told them to prove that the bill was correct and asked for an itemised bill, id been told that this was not possible as they did not have such a thing for roaming.

when i spoke to jim last week he went through every detail and every time id had the phone on, even turning the phone on up-dated the phone and cost me £26.

I was told because turkey is not in the EU, they cannot cap charges and do not have the facility to let you know you have a huge bill. hmmmm

what really pi**ed me off was when they took the money out of my bank not once but twice thus taking £1400 of my money and putting me in an overdraft, i have since recovered half.

    This is in the T&C:

All you need to do is buy it more than 24 hours before you travel, and we'll take care of the rest. To get this bundle text TRAVEL to 6640

So maybe you used it before it was active as you were already in the country when you ordered it

With resepct you need to think about what you do and honestly calm down.

Saying "I told them there's no chance in hell i'm paying that and would sort the issue in court" is not going to make and customer service rep feel that they will do much over and above to help you.

Smartphones do a lot of checking and updating in the background, Did you leave and email or facebook app open for example, 10MB is not a lot of data on a smart phone in normal use.

Unfortunatly yours is not an unusual store, many people don't realise how much "chatter" smartphes make with updates and constanch checking they make.

Same happened to me and my friends! I am just shocked how companies like that claim that they provide best calling options and services and in reality are so much irresponsible. It is just unacceptable!
I guess we get the service we deserve! it seems that everyone talks the talk but nobody walks the walk!
They will tell that Turkey is not in EU, you should had activated that bundle before going abroad and so on, and will end up paying it.

Regarding the roaming charges, despite the fact that EU announced a cap on these charges, nobody really took action or published reduced prices.

The EU proposal for data roaming cap within the EU is due to come into effect July 2012....
  • How long did you leave it between calling Orange and turning data roaming on?
Like someone has already mentioned the network applies the bundle in 24 hours after requesting it.
