This is an Indonesian meal, a big plateful of vegetables with a satay-type sauce either poured over or in separate bowls to dip into. Lovely on a hot day. The sauce can be warm or cool. Be warned you will need a lot of the sauce! I like to pick things that can be eaten just with fingers, but it doesn’t really matter.
For the veg, use anything you like, a mixture of raw and cooked is nice, but don’t overcook them. Here’s a list of suggestions:

    Raw
    Little gem lettuce leaves
    Cherry tomatoes
    Cucumber
    Radishes
    Spring onion
    Carrots

    Cooked
    New potatoes
    Asparagus
    Lightly cooked cauliflower
    Blanched french beans
    Blanched mange tout

The sauce: you can make it from scratch ie roast your own peanuts) but this is really just as nice. You will need to keep tasting and adjusting.
Put into either a microwave-proof bowl or a saucepan: About 2 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter, large pinch chilli powder, salt, pepper, big squeeze lemon juice, dash soy sauce, 1 teasp dark brown sugar, and about enough cold water to cover. Heat gently, stirring. Once it’s all melted taste it. It will thicken as it cools, so you may want to add more water. You can add a little creamed coconut; you can also stir in a little creme fraiche.

    List please :D

    You weren't asking me, but:

    Pasta sauce: onion/garlic/pepper/mushroom/passata/oregano
Risotto: onion/garlic/pepper/mushroom (this cooks very like the above...)
Stir fries. Whatever you have from the garden.
Red pepper and lentil soup: onion/carrots/celery/garlic/pepper/mixed herbs/red lentils/passata

I ate all of these even when I was eating meat.

If you like the taste of meat that much just eat it. Let your conscience be your guide.

Some people like meat but don't eat it because of their conscience, hence the need for meat substitutes. I see no problem with them myself. No animals die to make it.

Dairy and egg production, does involve animal death.

Personally, I like to use that produce well, minimising the amount of animals used in my lifestyle and ensuring they come from the best sources possible.

Not all meat subsitutes use eggs and dairy. I'm vegan and only buy Redwoods and Fry's.

  • If you (understandably!) can't stand soya milk then give rice milk or oat milk a try instead.

I know :( I haven't told my DD that yet, as I think she needs to keep having dairy products atm.

How far do you take it though, we had a discussion around the table the other day if insects on veg counts, or is it only furry animals that matter?
Do vegans have to have totally organic fruit and veg, ie no insects died in the making of it?
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

You can get calcium from other sources. Animal sources aren't particularly great anyway as the animal protein has a negative effect on the absorption of calcium.

As a vegan I don't kill anything. I don't know if you have heard of the Jains but they follow a very strict form of vegetarianism where even micro-organisms are protected.

Organic food production isn't vegan - or even vegetarian - as it uses animal by-products. There is such a thing as stock-free organic which is vegan, but it's probably only feasible if you are growing your own.
