My dad has gone. He's staying with his sister tonight and going home tomorrow. I'm worried about how he'll feel when he gets home to that big empty house all by himself - since Mum died he's been busy with the funeral to organise and one or other of us being there almost every day. Still, he'll have to be alone eventually, and it can't be put off forever. I'll definitely phone him tomorrow evening, though, and I've booked up to go and see him in a week or two, without kids, and give him a hand with some of his admin.
He and I worked very hard trying to sort out the devastation that was DS's room. We've put several boxes of stuff up in the loft, and nearly filled a black sack with rubbish just from his room. We've dismantled a wardrobe - although it's still in pieces downstairs and needs transferring to the garage - and moved a filing cabinet and shelf unit upstairs. So we got plenty of exercise, and DS's room is a lot better than it was (although covered in lego again immediately). Sadly, all this effort has been at the cost of chaos everywhere else in the house.I'm trying to hang on to my feeling of achievement because of the progress with DS's room, and the extra space downstairs without the filing cabinet and shelf unit.
One day, one day, I will get this house habitable. Just in time for the kids to leave home, at this rate, I imagine. I still love it, though. Other posters can say whatever they like about prices going up or down - I fell in love with this house when I first saw it on RM in 2008, I bought it 11 months ago, I don't care what its price would be now, it's my home and I'm still happy with it.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

letmy dh do that for you...he'll like having a job
lydia, that's what home should feel like IMO
dh is as happy as larry because an essential ingrediant to my family christmas hadn't been cooked until today (on purpose because I didn't want a whole heap of leftovers at once) and now he's munching away contentedly.0 -
great documentary on bbc4 now, about decaying food. They are filling up a kitchen and a garden with food and observing what happens.0

Thank you for volunteering him. That would be very helpful.
Did I ever tell you what happened when we came to see you? I hadn't told my kids that I'd only met you online. I just said we were going to see "my friend, lir" and that you'd only fairly recently moved to your smallholding and I'd never been there. They're used to meeting lots of my friends in varied situations, so they didn't think anything of it. Anyway, we found our way to your house, and saw you just outside your front door as we drove past to the parking space. DS asked if the lady by the door was you, and I realised I couldn't say I didn't know, without giving it away that I hadn't met you IRL before. :rotfl:Do you know anyone who's bereaved? I know... I just don't like programmes about that type of thing, nor about animals killing each other, nor about grime or horrible stuff, or any Dickens dramatisation, or any violent films, or anything that involves cruelty... I much prefer fluffy bunnies, shoes and nice things:o. About the dirtiest thing I get up to is talking about the economy. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
