It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Lydia the good bits seem to outweigh the bad - hopefully now you are either broken up for the summer or at least able to not have to do any marking and after school activities.

I'm in the middle of what I call the "magic fortnight". I have broken up (independent school) but my kids have not (state school). :D

<snip> I guess my point is that it is not hassle free managing money to get the best return but it is possible to still earn decent amounts of interest.

Oh yes, I agree. I spent ages moving my money around chasing better interest and bonus payments and things. LJ - I must get around to that Halifax reward thing.

Must now go and get ready for this evening. Bad Lydia - put the laptop down and do something useful!!!!!
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Oh yes I have 3 of those and the DW 4 :)
Also lloyds vantage used to pay 4% on up to 7k per account so DW has 3 of those too - monthly round trip for 1k through all those 10 accounts takes 5 minutes each month.

Also with the halifax ones you can 'switch your banking' to each account in branch for a £50 incentive for each one. DW and I are also half way though a 3 month period of not having Santander accounts so we can then be new customers again for £45 top cash back and £100 joining incentive each...

Then there is the matched betting, the mobile phone cashback and just generally cashback on insurance etc and of course stoozing. This all adds about £1000 per month tax free to the family budget

Plus of course it takes a fair amount of time so less time to go out and spend any money. I just assume everyone can support an approx quarter of a million mortgage on a salary of less than 1 tenth of that?

michaels, I do similar with the halifax rewards. Do a FP once a month on all 3 accounts, £15 a month for 10 seconds work. Can't understand why loads of people I told about it don't do it.

Dad, mom, brother & his wife all opened accounts specifically for this.

Not bad having an account with only £1 in all month (except for the 3 seconds in transfer a grand in & straight out again).
    I think....

Downside to the halifax thingy is that you used to be able to open 7, then 3 accounts. Now you can open 1 sole account, & 1 joint account only I'm afraid.

I sort of know exactly how you feel although mine is 'extension money' which is now rapidly disappearing (plus it is not real money in that I have a matching amount of mortgage it was just not worth repaying as the mortgage interest rate is less than the savings rate).

Life is always more complicated though with tax credits meaning that possibly I should not have any savings this year (except for ISAs) depending on what I earn later in the year and possible redundancy meaning that I should may be even cash in the ISAs and use it all to pay down the mortgage to maximise benefits entitlement.

And if that was complicated enough the extension money is the most easily accessed with the lowest interest rates but once it is spent I may then need to work out whether I should use money from my cash ISAs (pay a lower rate but can not be replenished this tax year) my regular saver (great rate which I would not want to forfeit by withdrawing before the 12 months are up) or my other main savings account (5% rate, 30 days notice and again can not be replenished).

Sometimes I think just living day to day and only worrying about an overdraft limit must be much more straight-forward.

Is the tax and benefits system really unable to work on a net position rather than a gross one? I'd like to say I'm shocked 'n' appalled but I'm not.

I got back to Aus. That's why I'm typing at 2am my time. Normally I don't really suffer from jet lag.

Allegedly it is due to get worse in that savings will be taken in to account for all benefits including tax credits so a family on a moderate income saving a deposit so they can move from rented to their own home will suddenly become ineligible for tax credits whereas the same family who have bought a property or who rent and spend all their income on cars and holidays will still get them. Apparently it all makes sense?

For some reason, the weather this year is getting on my nerves.

Already had a holiday this year, and have today booked two more.

Seriously considering another contract overseas again as well. For the last few years I've not even been remotely tempted, and turned all the offers down flat, but the last couple have been surprisingly tempting.

Which is weird, because I really thought I had kicked the habit.:(

Savings still completely baffle me. I couldn't coordinate accounts/moving stuff... I struggle to actually open accounts to be honest. That's why the money's in dire accounts... but 'safe'.

What do you struggle with? Is it something to do with your specialness and the process?
