My understanding of Silvercar's second post on the subject is that what she wants is to get the doctor to get a second opinion from another doctor without telling the patient.
Correct.
I've now had a discussion with the consultant (without the knowledge of the patient;)).
He is quite happy to have a second opinion if that is what we want, and he does have peer discussions with other hospitals' consultants when necessary and would refer if he felt it beneficial.
Apparently, these illnesses are difficult to call and the patient is doing far better than the average and far better than expected initially. So any averages in terms of life expectancy are meaningless. If we had asked that question 3 months ago we would have been given little hope, but his responses to treatment have been better than would have been predicted.
So the doom and gloom at my last visit were unfounded or at least premature.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Once at his office he told me to circle all spends of OVER 200 million, because they ''counted'' I did tell him that the sub 200million spends added up to billions and they weren't worried. In that context it was ''not much''. I felt a bit sick. Its easy to understand how people dealing with money like that can't see the big deal in £5 coffee hits, even if thats £25-50 a week. I think it does create a disconnect.
I'm pretty good at maintaining the separation.
For me, the millions and billions are numbers on a screen. Money out of my pocket is a very different thing.0 -
I find it hard when spending 100k on the extension to think about whether £40 or £60 on a tap makes any odds if that makes sense and yet I will look out for bogofs at Sainsburys to save a couple of quid.I'm pretty good at maintaining the separation.

I've just ordered an "Eco flap", letterbox cover for the inside that helps stop heat leaking out of the letterbox and also stops the letter box rattling in the wind. The blurb claims that 27% of heating can be lost through your letterbox. But 27% of what?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I find that hard too...things for the house. A tap is a tap right....or can it also be a thing that gives you pleasure, or annoyance, every time you look at it or use it. I think for us its easier, as we are pretty sure we'll be here a very long time, so personal taste rules, but if you are thinking of moving.....a rather nice tap might be as good as a REALLY nice tap.0 -

That reminds me of our cat that could stand on hind legs to lift the main letterbox and jab at the second plastic flappy one to seek attention to gain entrance.
If you live in a flat above somebody else it is time to check that you can benefit from their heating arrangements. Perhaps enquire if their heating system is in fully working order.
