... and as I hinted, if your broadband has a bandwidth cap, using this a fair proportion of the time will take the limit about 4 times further, though as Mike says it doesn't further compress some formats - mp3, etc
  • Beware removing Onspeed on WinXP can cause your internet connection to be damaged.

My father-in-law found Onspeed actually slowed down his internet connection which is why I was removing it.
  • How was it damaged?
  • The symtoms were dial-up still happens, but browser pages cannot be displayed and mail cannot be downloaded.

Looks like it corrupted the winsock settings, even a "netsh int ip reset" wouldn't fix it.

Luckily I've come had this before and a little program called WinSockXPFix sorted it out.

Probably proxy settings. Did you remove or uninstall?

No it was more serious than that, proxy settings were fine, an uninstall of onspeed, definitely killed Windows XP IP config.

Another synptom was when you pinged to localhost, it made the pc speaker beep and strange characters appeared as the hostname.

It's not the only software to do this, an uninstall of Norton Antivirus will do the same, it seems XP IP stack seems vulnerable to certain software that makes use of it!
  • Many of you will have seen the press adverts for Onspeed, claimed to increase the speed of your computer at only a fraction of the cost (£25) of Broadband.

Has anyone got experience of Onspeed. Does it work, and is it worth the money? Or are there better Broadband substitutes?

    Thanks, Wolseley6110

It's unbelievable how some people can't be bothered to look.
If you only took the trouble to go back through the 3 pages of this thread.

    Be kind to Wolseley!

He didn't know he was in this thread! He got put here after starting his own thread off (without looking around!)

In fact Wolseley had posted on the Techie Board and it was shifted across here so he didn't know there was already a thread about Onspeed. I merged it with this thread and pm'd him to point him in this direction :)

In fact djohn, if you go into your User CP and edit options you can change the forum default from showing 10 posts per page to 40 posts per page ;)
