car broke down possible fuel contamination

Options
Fuel Contamination, purchased fuel from Asda Thurmaston Leicestshire
23/06/2011 pump 6.
£50.00 worth of fuel, car engine died on me.
Garage advised in there opinion that the fuel is contaminated and this has burnt one of the pumps and caused an issue with the ECU the electronic brain of the Freelander to not work. I am looking at a bill of over £1,000 and more. I have approached Asda and given them a copy of the till receipt of the diesel purchased and even offered them a sample of the Diesel to test but they do not want to know. There answer is it would of affected more cars on the road? I have been directed to Trading Standards and i have spoken with Consumer direct who have advised i have a strong case under the sale of goods act.
I will persue this and get back what is owed to me- is there ANYONE out there that has purchased Diesel from the same place.
Then all affected will have a stronger case to litigate claims.

Await your responses.

How can Asda be sure you only purchased fuel from them?

You'd need to find out what the fuel is contaminated with yourself, it wouldn't be up to Asda to prove it - as like the above poster says, you could have filled up with more diesel elsewhere the same day...Ii also cannot fathom how contaminated fuel fries an ECU - you need to be finding out what its contaminated with...then you need to show this to asda and they need to check to see if pump 6 matches your fuel results...

Thankyou for your above replies, the receipt proves i filled my tank up with Diesel from Asda, the Garage have confirmed that without a shadow of a doubt the diesel is contaminated and it smells like petrol, the receipt i have states diesel. I do not purchase fuel from anywhere else. C & E will have a sample of the fuel from the garage, but i am looking for anyone else who has experienced there car die on them and left with a hefty garage bill especially as my Car had a full service previously and the vehicle was fine then. The diesel was purchased from ASDA at Thurmaston 23/06/2011

Your best bet will be to read the local papers or contact them to see if anyone else has made complaints about the fuel station.

Cars break down all the time after filling up and will continue to break down after people fuel them - sometimes they'll break down before they are filled up! Your problem will be proving it and may need an engineers report.

Could also try ringing local garages and see if anyone else has had the same issue!

Think the garage may be trying it on here and pulling the wool a bit

I thought I had a similar problem last year - we had just filled up when we got a problem

turned out, although the cost was similar, the problem was not related to the fuel - it was just unfortunate timing.

Asda Thurmaston is a self-serve unmanned fuel service station. I've used it in the past with no problems.

Thank you sky111, yes you are right, however, the Garage is reputable and we have used them for years. Without a shadow of a doubt they say it is down to the diesel in the tank. I am getting this tested and will keep you posted. The garage also advised that the fuel looks like frog spawn. My gripe is with the service i have received at the store and Head Office, i will speak to the local newspapers to see if they have had any complaints and also Trading Standards.

Not quite sure what the relevance is?

I used my tv several times a week for 11 months with no problems. Then it broke :rotfl:
