a lie to say I cant do something instead of saying or making up that I can? Ok fine bt then I am still OVER QUALIFIED, what do you suggest I do? Put it all back on the CV and be over over qualified?

I have never understood the over qualified excuse for knocking somone back, I love so called over qualified candidates for the skill set and experience they bring. Even if it means they are gone in 6/12 months.

Sorry, should have been clearer, I meant you'd have gaps if you took any roles out.

but I haven't taken roles out

seriously - I have had it said to me at a 2nd interview then saw the job advertised again 4 months later! They say you will leave as the job may be too boring but not half as boring as having no job and they do not even give you a chance. Most are paying more money anyway so Id be bored for more ££

LadyMissA you sound very very negative. Hopefully you don't come across like this in interviews, or I wouldnt be surprised if you can't get a job. You have to look on the positive side at all times, have confidence in yourself. Nobody wants to employ anyone with a 'poor me' attitude, and that isn't meant as a personal criticism, but employers want up-beat, positive employees with 'can-do' attitudes, and that has to come across in every communication you have with them, even to talking to receptionists and security guards!

If an interviewer points out that you are overqualified, you can say 'yes I realise this, but I am happy to take a lower job within your company in order to show you how I am worth more so that I might be in line for any possible future promotions.'

Sorry, thought I read that some friends had suggested taking roles out of your CV because you felt you weren't being taken seriously and being seen as over-qualified. That's really what I was referring to about gaps - if you took them out then there would be gaps. Sorry if I've misunderstood.

Actually yes. In the area I work in if you do not give full disclosure of every job you have had it would be considered to be a fraudulent application.

Sorry to barge in on the conversation but I would like to add a bit of my experience in here. I have been told to take away my highest qualifications when applying for 'basic' jobs as they call them by my JSA advisor as companies will come back with the response that you are 'over qualified'. This is something I have not done though as I am proud of my qualifications and it shows the time and effort I have put in to gain them. Just a case of keeping on going and hoping for the best.

I have used agencies a lot in the past. The way I deal with them is to take one day to go round all of the ones I want to register with, having made an appointment to go see them before. I tend to go almost in interview clothes, certainly smart work clothes anyway, hair done, makeup etc. Once registered you need to chase them on an almost daily basis - unless you are in their sight line they often tend to ignore or forget about you. Eventually they get fed up with you and get you a job...

You sound cynical - jobsearch is a numbers game, the more you apply for the more likelyhood that you will get a job, so long as all the basics are right, CV, application letter, appearance, etc.

I registered with Robert Half who are big in accounts and then called them every few days and emailed them too only to be told it was a free service and in the 5 years that this guy had worked there I was the one person who contacted them so much and then never heard from them again!

There is nothing wrong with my CV, letters or appearance since I worked for a large co in London for the last 5 years and I think I went in to work not wearing a suit every day I wouldn't have lasted too long.

I know it's a numbers game the more you apply for the better chance you have but it's not that easy

Thought I'd update you all. After 6 weeks I got promoted, so I'm now a permanent member of staff and I'm running the department I joined!

Temping certainly changed my life for the better and opened up opportunities for me.
