Granted they do push prices up in areas where they have no competition but where there's a load of them undercutting each other there's no way the profit margin is large on fuel.
Independents near here are LUDICROUSLY expensive and a Texaco down the road which also appears to be kinda independently owned is stupidly priced too.0 -

But these independents still survive and the owners are hardly in the poorhouse. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
50p will get a simple foot pump from the boot sale :money:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Why not charge an entrance fee to the forecourt & parking fee at the pumps, 20p paper towel dispenser, £1 for a diposable cardboard bucket automatically filled with water to clean your windscreens.
As I have said earlier the machines in UK are over complicated when all you need is a £5 length of hose a £2 clip and a metal box which has a needle gauge no electricity required, except to power the underground compressor which is minimal power, minimal maintenance.
Why not charge for those things? I keep stuff in my boot including water and a sponge and paper towels a small hand towel and even a foot pump so I wouldn't ever have to pay for them.
An underground compressor? Yeah because that would be cheap to install wouldn't it. And if it did need maintenance then it would need to be dug up/get someone to go down into a confined space(method statements and all that palaver too) and that isnt going to be cheap either is it.
Face it - everything has its price nowadays - you dont like it - do the proper MSE thing and walk away from paying the charge. Even better - buy a foot pump."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

The compressor doesn't need to be underground, in fact most aren't these days and the retail fuel industry managed with it for decades before. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I know it doesnt but if you bothered to read the post i quoted you will see it was in answer to Wig mentioning it being underground.
10 internet points for you."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
I think you'll find Wig that the electricity required to power a compressor is a lot more than a digital gauge etc, so it's hardly negligible. Just saying.
It's well known that petrol retailers especially supermarkets make very little on the fuel itself.
Missing the point completely.... unecessary complicated technology fails, small compressors housed within the pump stand will be more prone to failure than a heavy duty compressor stored underground....or in a shed at the rear of the building....jeez the electronics involved inside those gadget boxes is prone to failure - I know, because guess what, they are often out of order.
French retailers make the same margins.0 -

This isn't true either. I have noticed that it is always Tesco who makes the first move to increase prices round here. And the others then tow the line within a week afterwards, there is no competition in the real sense they just wait for Tesco to move up and then follow them.0 -

Not difficult to dig a pit and put a door on one side. Jeez for all I know the compressor is in a store room at the rear of the station within the main building, point is it is obviously housed somewhere else where it makes no noise and can be serviced easily and can be big and hence more reliable.0 -
Having read this depth of disscusion 50p seems a ;)bargainI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
