My DD loved these! I used Pura, but I don't see why using butter would make a huge difference.0

Butter is far superior to vegetable shortening which is processed chemical muck.
I use a lot of American recipes and always substitute butter for shortening. Never had a failure yet. It's only 50g0 -
I agree with thriftlady, butter is better tasting not so good with the collestral levels
Yesterday we tried her Roast Potatoes
Par boil for 7 mins drain and shake to give rough texture then sprinkle semolina
yes semolina instead of the old fashion flour
Really nice tasting
Cheers

Isn't shortening horrible trans fats? I'd have thought butter was better for you .0

prettypennies - did you ever make the Nigella custard creams? Did you use butter instead of shortening?0

Hello, old-stylers,
have to bake birthday cake tonight for my DD. Have bought a cake mould
http://www.janeasher.com/sugarlist.php?productcode=0689WN&subcat=Novelty&cat=Bakeware
like the flower one on this page.
The instructions that came with it said to coat it in veg shortening then flour, NOT butter, veg oil or a long list of other things.
Always before I have greased with butter.
Do I risk it or do I need a trip to Asda tonight? (will it be next to the butter do you think?)
Thanks, Shona0 -
Not sure why they would want to use veg shortening, I am an ex cake decorator and havent heard of this
they must have their reasons, has a neighbour got a bit of Trek you could borrow as it seems a pity to have to go out and buy some and it would be a shame to waste your hard work if it stuck in the tin not to mention the expense.
Do what you love :happyhear0 -
Thanks taplady,
Trex was the suggestion I could find on googling.
It is a very pale shiny metal tin, not like the other black cake tins I have. If it wasn't a high pressure situation I would def just bung in the butter as usual!
My DH thinks I am going to too much trouble but faced with a childrens birthday, the Martha Stewart in me comes out I am afraid.
I think Nigella is a big one for Trex, will have a look at her website.
Thanks again,
Shona0 -
Good luck with your baking. Let us know how it turns out - maybe even a piccie!;)Do what you love :happyhear0

Thanks for that - I have the 'Dinner Lady' cookery books and have often wondered what vegetable shortening was. I may try out some of these recipes now.0
