Shortening is a type of white processed fat. This question was asked just recently, so I'll add this question to keep ideas together.

There was a great long thread on this - last year - I think. From what I can remember I think Trex and Cookeen used to be made of 'hard' fats which are the BAD trans fats, but the manufacturers spotted that we were getting more educated and changed them. I think if you now look at a Trex packet it will say that it's not trans fats (tho I still don't know what it is). I think they are now supposed to be much less bad for us than they were, tho they do crop up a lot in US cookbooks. I either use butter or sunflower marge for baking, tho for pastry I very occasionally use some Trex + butter as it makes shorter pastry. I think it is all very confusing !0

I have found a brilliant recipe to take to a party (rather than a present!) but it calls for something called vegetable shortnening for the frosting. It says un Australia it's called So Lite and in America it's called Crisco.
Do any of you know what it is in the UK?Just decided I need to do something about my ridiculous spending. Hoping you guys can help me!!0 -
Trex or Flora White. You can get both from any supermarket.
My mum used to use Cookeen but I don't think it's made nowadays.0 -
Hi Kelly,

This previous thread may help: vegetable shortening??
I'll add your post to it later to keep the replies together.

Hmm, apparently Cookeen is still on the go, Sainsburys have it. It's cheaper than either Trex or Flora White.0
