Hi, Angel,
Like the other posters have said it is a vegetable fat suitable for baking like Trex or cookeen. I use a lot of American recipes and never use this stuff. I always substitute butter as I like something natural. Never had a recipe fail because of this0 -
Now, how do you reproduce those biscuits today? I will give you a recipe and some pointers.
2 cups self rising flour
1 cup buttermilk
a lump of solid shortening the size of a walnut. This can be real butter, margarine, lard or solid vegetable shortening. This has to be at room temperature to blend smoothly into the dough. Do not, and I repeat, do not use a soft dairy spread - they contain so much water that they won't work for any baking purposes.
You know, reading this thread reminded me of a song .
Horrible though it was, the words to it were something like - 'mommas little girl likes shortening, shortening ..(Repeated)...bread.

Yes I remember.
The recipe I'm doing is for Buttercream Icing, for Blokes, Birthday Cake.
1/2 Cup of solid Vegetable Shortening
1/2 Cup of Butter
4 Cups of Sifted Confectioners' Sugar (I assume Icing Sugar)
2 Tablespoons of Milk
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
Not sure what it's gonna taste like by I'm looking forward to making it. I brought a Scooby Doo Cake tin from the States, my Mum used to get these character tins when I was a little girl. I remember my favourite one was a Holly Hobbie cake made on my 10th Birthday.
She used to make the buttercream with stork marg which was a bit sickly. the above is the Wilton recipe so I hope it will be ok.
I'll let you know and post a picture of the finished cake.
Thanks all
