Replacement Engine rip off and dodgy garages??

How the hell can a garage charge you a grand for repairs that didn't fix the problem and then say don't drive it, it won't last, ie,
"I ended up taking it to a local garage in Camborne callled Treverbyn Motors to let them try and fix it and they had it for nearly 2 months and basically replaced the turbo and charged me £1060 for my troubles.
The chap there said that he thought my engine could go at anytime so i would probably need a new one".
You have been had over, and by more than 1 party, sorryI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

OK, here's my take after having a think..
Firstly, any reasonable person who is told "the engine could go at any time" would take that to mean don't drive it or don't drive it very far, preferably home and to a garage to get a new one and certainly not a couple of hundred miles unless you want to take the risk.
Secondly, if the reason that they said this is because it was rattling or showing signs of death, that could be from low oil pressure. Low oil pressure would mean that the turbo wasn't getting the lubrication and cooling it required and therefore went bang both the first time and the second time. An oil pressure test should have been done after the first one went. Maybe it had and that was why the mechanic had said the engine could go at any time. They should have told you but IME, it seems pointless telling customers anything nowadays that has a £ cost to sort as they either aren't interested or choose to ignore the warning.
It could be that all of this has originally been caused by a high mileage or worn engine or a defective oil pump or pressure valve resulting in low pressure to the turbo as said in which case you have no case against either the garage that fitted the turbo or the company that supplied the replacement turbo and I suspect that they might have found that upon inspection the turbo bearings had gone.
So why did they fit a new turbo as they like you and me would know that, :AI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

The garage had my van for 2 months
They fitted a new turbo charging me over a grand
They spilt windscreen sealant onto my paintwork
They left oil stains on my passenger seat
They left a little box of bolts on the passenger seat
I'm now told that the engine undercover is missing
Midland Turbos said the new turbo was damaged due to "mass oil contamination".
Treverbyn Motors obviously had a word and scuppered the warranty like he said he would.
It doesn't take 2 months to sort a bloody van out does it?
I asked for a more detailed invoice to show what had been done.
To be honest this garage is the least of my problems as i paid Green Engines for a replacement engine and they sent me a pile of junk then did a runner so Treverbyn and his "flintstone" garage can be put on the back burner for now i think while i pursue this John Gould from Green Engines.
I WONT be using Treverbyn Motors again!!0 -
Turbo replacements can be fraught with problems, it's one of those few things like cam belt changes where it's worth paying the extra to get the main dealer to perform...knowledge and proper back up.
As for the replacement engine, i'm afraid common sense tells you that a 4 year old engine from a VW van will have problems.
One, it might happen to be several years older, and Two, it might well have covered more like 247000 miles in that time and Three, it might well have had only a couple of oil changes in that starship mileage, you have no way of knowing.
Not as the breaker is being dishonest of course, it's just that in a busy scrappy things get confusing.
Japanese grey imports are similarly amazingly low mileage, everyone in Japan buys cars to cover 4K a year doncha know.
Agree with the above poster about Transits, they are still THE van to have, will stand punishment and neglect better than any other.
Travellers use them for good reasons.0 -
I went through Find a Part - A Reputable Company.
They put me onto Green Engines - A reputable member of Find a Part.
I paid the so called Reputable find a Part member.
For an engine from a 2007 T5 with 47k on the clock complete with all ancillaries.
I was sent an upside down T5 engine with a duff turbo, Missing pulley wheel, Rear crankshaft seal housing missing, Front crankshaft seal housing bolts missing and broken, Crankshaft loose, Turbo broken due to too much play in the bearings, Only 3 bolts holding the sump on rather than 12?
The bloke obviously knew what he was doing as he sold me a duff engine then did a runner.
When i found out it was a duff engine i tried to ring Green engines and they had already gone.
I am now in talks with the bosses at Find a Part for as far as i'm concerned i went through them to find the engine and i bought the engine from one of their members.
Hopefully Find a Part will sort this problem or i may have to consider legal action against their member and that wont be too good for find a parts reputation.
They are being pretty helpful so far....................0 -

What a mess, hope you get somewhere.
One piece of advise save you money and don't bother chasing find a part, you will get NOWHERE chasing that one. Check their terms and conditions, they only act as an introducer in exactly the same way as yell.com or even the yellow pages does. Here is a snippet from their T&C's
"The client, the customer and the supplier shall hold the 'introducer' (Findapart) harmless in and from all claims, liabilities, damages and detriments not arising from the introducers actual negligence or malfeasance. The client, customer and supplier irrevocably covenant, promise and agree to hold the 'introducer' harmless from and against all losses, claims, expenses, suits, damages, costs, demands or liabilities, joint or several, of whatever kind or nature that the client, customer or supplier may experience as a result of using the services of the 'introducer'.
"
It does sound like you have been very unlikely with your T5 being in North Devon they are pretty much the van of choice around here and I know plenty of people with both T4's and T5's that have astronomical mileage and are perfectly sound vans with nothing more than consumables need doing.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
They have already tried the read our terms & Conditions one on me and it didn't wash and i told them that so they offered to source me an engine and vet the supplier personally this time.
Basically they "introduced" me to a lying robber who took my money and did a runner.
This would be pretty damaging publicity for their 30 year reputation and they know that and i won't hesitate to exploit that fact until i get what i want which is a fair deal.
I run my own business and know how damaging bad press can be.
I have gone to the Chairman Terry Gray now and will be dealing with him in the future.
Ask yourself this - Would you deal with a company who "introduce" you to lyers who will take your money and run???
I don't think so.................0 -

Answer this, how many rogue traders advertise in the yellow pages or yell.com?? They offer exactly the same service as find a part, they only list the suppliers to you. Unless they specifically state that all traders are vetted I doubt you will have a leg to stand on, I can't see anywhere on there site that states that.
If they are currently trying to help you its out of generosity and courtesy rather than legally having to.
Its up to you at the end of the day if you want to try and sue them, I just can't see you getting very far as A) they only introduce you andthere T&Cs clearly state what they will and won't accept liability for, which C) you agree to when using their service.
Best of luck anyway keep the thread up dated as it wil be interesting to know if you do get anywhere with them.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
