Red 'STOP' warning light for Pegeot 206.

This morning the above warning light came on periodically but frequently. The car is driving fine and no other warning lights were on.

Any ideas please as the car doesn't have a manual booklet.

Thankyou.

This is rather a critical warning and means STOP, ie pull over immediately and find out what's wrong. It can be anything from brakes to severe overheating.

Having said that, it's a Peugeot and more often than not it's due to a minor electronic blip. I had it on a 406 I had and it turned out to be a bad earth somewhere.

So my advice is before driving it any further to thoroughly check everything is ok and only then assume it's an electronic glitch in which case you can probably still drive it safely but further investigation is needed.

Its most likely low brake fluid or low brake pads on a 206.

Does the temp gauge move, does it only happen on a hill or is it totally random ?

    Thanks everyone.

mluton - only started this morning but totally random and temp guage moves. Nothing obvious to suggest what it is. Brakes also work fine and no other warning lights.

Went through MOT last month so would be surprised if anything to do with brakes.

Brakes may well work fine, but the level could be low as per previous posts, and just because it passed mot a month ago that was on the day of the test, it dont mean that nothing will go wrong in the next year. Check the level of the brake fluid before they fail maybe altogether and you plough your passed an mot a month ago car into a crowd of people.

Ok we've checked fluid levels of Brake fluid, coolant, oil, water and all are ok.

    For the love of god...

An MOT only guarantees the condition at the time of the test. No dismantling of any components take place and if they cannot see the pads, they cannot comment on the thickness.

A MOT should and must never ever be used as a guide to the mechanical condition of the vehicle.

Now as you mentioned you thought the brake pads should be OK as it went through a MOT a month ago when was the last time the car was serviced and they actually checked?

The car was bought a month ago from a mechanic who regularly serviced the car, I have all the documents. It was also MOTed by a garage I have used myself for many years and trust. I am aware an MOT is a snapshot in time.

As an update, although he can't guarantee it, I have spoken to Peugeots servicing department and the guy said from what we've told him and checked he would only add to check the doors and boot are fully closed. As the car drives as usual and there are no other warning signs he himself would keep driving it and only bring it in If it comes on permanently.

Mine has done this from time to time - perhaps half a dozen times in the 10 years I've had it. No other warning lights, checked the obvious things - fluid levels, etc. In the end I put it down to an electrical glitch - and as mentioned above, I'd only take it in if the light stayed on, or came on more often.
