Vodaphone bill but I am not a customer

Options
Just received a letter from Vodaphone regarding an outstanding balance of around £100.
It was to me, obviously at my address, but I am not a vodaphone customer, and never have been.
I rang vodaphone and they confirmed my date of birth etc didn't match that account and so I presume it is someone using my details.

The Vodaphone man just said to return the letter to them and they will sort it out. I don't mind returning the letter but I am thinking if that is a bad move in case they don't sort things out?

Anyone else had this?

Thanks.

Sounds like someone has used your info to get an account fraudulently.

I'd hang on the letter for a few days and then call back and make sure the acc's been closed. If it hasn't get the agent you talk to, to pass it over to the Voda fraud dept.

I would make copy of the letter and keep record of the names of people who I talked to. Also would ring Vodafone and try to get the official letter saying that the case is closed.

    Hi onehitwonder,

I can understand your concerns here and as the guys have stated it would appear that you may have been the victim of impersonation. As such, this would need to be investigated by our Fraud Department.

To ensure that this case gets referred to them could you email the details on the letter you've received across to us via the contact details in our profile page here marked for my attention?

As soon as you're in touch with us we'll get this dealt with and update you as soon as possible.

    Kind regards,

    @Lee of Vodafone,

    'Victim of impersonation'? :rotfl:

Do you not see this as a clear case of IDENTITY FRAUD? Which it is!

This matter should have been refered to the VF fraud department on the first contact Onehitwonder made to CS.

Too often networks ignore crimes such as this and thefts (aka scams) from our accounts placing the blame on us, the victims, as I found from my own experience.

OP, go here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/51087 and get yourself credit reports to see if there are any other untoward applications for things, the phone may be the tip of the iceberg.

    Hi Intasun32,

I absolutely agree that this should have been referred to our Fraud Department when the OP initially contacted us.

As to why it wasn't is a question we can address internally as the guidelines for this type of situation are there for our agents to follow in order to ensure that investigations take place and any corrective action required can be taken.

Now that onehitwonder is in touch with us they can be assured that we'll get things looked into and update them as soon as we have some news.

    Kind regards to you both.

  • My brother contacted me 2 days ago to say he had received a couple of invoices from Vodafone for a applie iphone. He had received a letter from Vodafone thanking him for joining Vodafone along with a couple of invoices and he asked me to send an email to Vodafone telling them that he had not ordered or received any phone and that the account details on the invoices were not his account details.

My brother is self-employed but he doesn't even own a laptop or computer so I do his invoices and typing for him so I filled in an online form for Vodafone for him telling them that he had received invoices by mistake.

Alarm bells started ringing when he phoned me early yesterday morning to say he remembers receiving some kind of letter from the Halifax bank recently about some bank account but he ignored it thinking it was some selling tactic by them! I told him to find the letter and read it properly which he did - and guess what! Yes an account had been set up using his name and address. He went down yesterday afternoon and reported it as a fraud and they are dealing with it and he has never had an account with them. Whoever opened the account used £100 to open it along with an overdraft which they had spent - so the bank is owed money. They say they are confident on finding who has done this!

Today I have sent a letter to vodafone with the scanned invoices but my brother contacted me this evening to find 2 more invoices when he returned home from work! There could be 2 iphones now involved in this!

I believe my brothers name and address have been used to open the bank account and his business van has his name on it and is always parked outside his address. It is my belief it is somebody in the vicinity of where he lives as he hasn't received any parcels from Vodafone so whoever has received them must have tracked them, knowing that my brother leaves for work at 7.30am in the morning for work and have infiltrated the deliveries!

My brother is a hard-working man who is not computer literate and just simply says it will get sorted but I am computer literate and can understand what the consequences can be to him and his credit score!! Can anybody please help! Halifax bank are being supportive in investigating this but I think we may have been too late getting the information to Vodafone (not realising a crime had been commited!) Do we contact the police? or will the bank/vodafone inform them?

In my experience of ID theft the police are helpful and talkative but will take no action. They refer you to the credit reference agencies. I spoke to Experian who were very helpful in giving me details of fake related addresses that had been set up.
They also gave me contact details of organisations with who false accounts had been created. I then spent half a day phoning round and getting all details removed.
My case started with a letter thanking me for apllying for a credit card that I knew nothing about.

If Voda's fraud dept is working the way it should, they'll investigate and see the fraud.
They'll then block the sims, blacklist the handsets and delete the accounts from their live system and the searches from his credit file. And that should be the end of it.

If you're a third party on the acc you might want to email the Voda rep who posted above as well so they can double check with the fraud dept.
