i can't believe someone who worked for whsmiths would even publish this. im quite sure thats against company policy to divulge information outwith the business. penny stock is stock thats been written off, no longer ranged instore but that is for internal use only not for the customers benefit. its sent to the clearance store to try sell through the remaining stock, after all it is a business and has to make some kind of profit. hermione i actually hope you get sacked. see the big penny stock list you have? read the top of it properly. your might learn something.

You talk as if you own WHSmith. What difference does it make to you exactly if it does not effect you? As the previous poster said, why is it on the shelf? As usual, it is the customers fault because they pick something up that is for sale.

I understand that working with rude customers is difficult and not the easiest job but it is not exactly the hardest either, is it? It's not like being in a foreign country in the military, is it? Retail assistants have the choice to stay in that job or leave? There are as many miserable sales assistants as customers out there. It seems like no matter what shops you go into, some SA act like they are doing you a favour just by acknowledging you! In the US these people
would be sacked. I've worked in some pretty unpleasant jobs, but no matter
what it was, I have always put my work hat on and taken pride in performing my role well.

I don't think Hermione has done anything wrong, and no, I haven't taken advantage of any WHS penny items either.

I think I've missed something here...if WH Smith do not want to sell items for 1p why are the items out on the shelves. If it's some how 'internal' then keep them out the back, not out for the customers to see.

Shouldn't Pinky1989 be suggesting WH Smith have made the mistake by putting the 1p items on general display in the first place..........

customers arent aware the stock is 1p there are no shelf edge labels. theres a penny stock listing report thats updated on a daily basis and supposed to be checked once a week to remove the old stock from the shop floor. if people actually done their jobs right all penny stock would be removed from shop floor. thats how it is in my store.

i act like i own it? no im just loyal. i take pride in my work as do u im sure. customers are not aware that any of the stock is penny stock and its supposed to stay that way. if they take it to the till and it scans at a penny then thats fine. no ur right its not the hardest job in the world but for the amount of !!!! we hav to take on a daily basis is unbelievable thats all im saying. because i work in retail whenever i go into a shop i behave like i would like my customers to behave. i would never dream of speaking to anyone as rudely as i am spoken to sometimes. all im saying is that people are quick off the mark to slate a sales assistant for being rude but in my experience its almost always the customer that drives them to it!

everybody moans about the staff on here, its the customers fault that the staff get ratty. any member of staff can refuse to sell any1 anything they want. that depends on how the customer speaks to the staff member. i kno if i get a !!!!y customer i instantly dont want to be nice back to them but its my job and i have to. customers make the staffs day a living nightmare.id like you all to work a week in whsmith and put up with the !!!! we have to! iv been called allsorts in my work and i havent even done anything other than try to help the customer!

I think you may have had a bad day when you posted this. I owned
my own clothes shop for 19 1/2 years and worked day in day out behind my counter. Customers can get the hump sometimes but they are your bread and butter and I always told my staff to remember that.I think that your comment about customers making staffs day a living nightmare is rather an exaggeration. Most of the comments on here about SA's are said tongue in cheek. If you don't like your job and it upsets you as much as it would appear to I suggest that you leave as no one forces you to work there to be honest, especially if it makes you that unhappy.

Absolute twaddle! From my limited experience as a retail assistant and comparative expertise as a shopper, I would moot the idea that the majority of your transactions are peaceful and instantly forgettable. Perhaps the odd transaction is rude and maybe one a day unpleasant. If it is more than this, perhaps people are responding to your attittude and you would therefore benefit from further training - speak to your manager, they may be able to help:cool:.

i totally understand where you are coming from, but in my work its more than just dealing with customers that i have to do. staff are all under such pressure to keep the shop running and its customers that put things back in the wrong place and im talkin like, completely different departments, or customers that shout at u when something scans at wrong price on the till and dont even give u a second to correct it. i had a woman shout at me because she had 3 gift cards she saved up and unfortunately had expired even tho it states on them they expire after 12 months - it was alllll my fault accordin to her. and your right about the bad day thing, i got called 'vacant' for some reason by a lady because she interrupted me whilst servin a customer and i politely told her id b with her in a second lol. i have no tolerance for that. and its such a pity because i love my job.

No more bold than you saying customers make your day a living nightmare. If you work in retail, customers pay your wages and you ought to be able to cope with them.

A prickly personality is not generally requested for such work!

pinky1989...there's always gonna be some rude customers. but remember, these are a minority. don't let it get in your way if you love the job. just put them behind you. i'm sure you come across many pleasant customers too!

now.....do us all a favour and scan in a nice 'n' juicy whsmith 1p document. please?
