    Yes Im a sales assistant.
Ive had managers who let the staff take what they want, others who destroy all the stock and bin it, even know of one manager who use to take all the decent stuff and flog it on ebay.
Just wanted to reiterate what Hermione said - I worked for WHS for several years and what happens to penny stock depends entirely on the store manager.

Ive listed all the official clearance stores in my first post, theres only about 7 in the company. But some large stores do have clearance sections, wouldn't surprise me if blackpool had a lot of clearance stuff as I know its a very big store. :)

WOW they REALLY don't want to sell the 1p glitch items do they?! I was rudely treated in my local smiths but hey ho, I got my Blush makeup bag for a penny.
it's not like that was th only thing I was buying either. I've got photos, but I'm not allowed to post links until I've been posting longer ;) it's the makeup bag, plastic coated, rainbow colours. kind of psychedelic.

I went in, found the clearence section, picked out a few things I wanted not specifically looking for the penny items. went to the till. she scanned other things and then scanned that, looked confused. scanned again. scanned again. this went on six times until I said "look, it's scanning at a penny. it's obviously a penny." she then snapped "I'm not allowed to sell you this for a penny." I said (very calmly I have to admit, considerig the way she'd spoken to me) "call your manager please". queue was building behind me. till lady said "we've had a few till problems today" not to me, but to other people in the queue! I was thinking yeah, 1p items!!

manager came over, took bag and called head office aparently. she came back and said "I've been told to destroy the stock we have left, but I can sell you this one for a penny".

I smiled sweetly at the cashier, thanked the manager who pootled off to kill her stock...

cashier then scanned my last thing, a big file box. it scanned at £6.50 and I stopped her and pointed out the £4.99 tag which was cable tied to the front of it. she looked it all over, tag and all, even tried checking if the tag was real !!!!!!! she relented when I sighed loudly and began inspecting my nails. the woman in the queue behind me was stiffling a giggle.

I then paid, thanked her kindly, wished her a slightly sarcastic loooooooooovely day and left.

I am wondering, if they've had a lot of these in Basildon today, could I be the only one who argued the point, stood my ground and "wasted" 15 mins of mine and the cashier's time?!

Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.
  • hahaha...I'd like to see the managers either keep the things for themselves or destroy them now. ;)

While it's interesting that an MSE thread caused an article, it's a horribly done piece. This article implies hordes are crowding in to hunt down items marked as 1p in a sale rather than the truth of it being more like a treasure hunt for things that aren't marked at 1p and that aren't really supposed to be on the shelves.

Plus, I doubt this thread caused a "nationwide stampede" as the article states, it was more like shoppers going in and quietly seeking out 1p items and WHSmith didn't even realize that some added foot traffic was due to their accidental 1p "sale". There are no quotes or statistics even to support this supposed "stampede". This article really tries to make it seem like crowds were lining up to grab non-existent displays of things advertised at 1p.

I dont think the clearance stores will be very cheap as they cover the 1p with a sticker and charge a higher price, they probably know that everything has to be stickered so you cant LOSE it on the way to the till either.
Well done to Flibsey, I bet you were getting tense inside, I would have been shaking and how rude were the staff?
