Age 32, 100+% mortgage of 57k (including fees etc) on a 55k rundown detached house. Spent 4 years doing it up and sold in 2005 for 155k. Deposit of 70k and a mortgage of 180k on a 250k flat (central london!) in 2006 which is apparently now worth 350k. Silly money.Debt free (apart from mortgage)0

I was 19 and DH was 21. Didn't make that much on our first house. This house cost £66,500 (cheeky offer!!). We bought it 5 1/2 years ago and it's now worth about 200K so we've done quite well.

OH and I were 21 and 22 when we bought our first terraced house for 17,000 and my how we struggled with us both being on crap wages (him not much over £100 a week and me about £70.
Sold after four years and improving our wages slightly .....oh and I was pregnant. Sold for 28.000 so we had 8,000 after other costs to put as deposit on semi where we are now which we bought for 43,000.
All this was with endowment which we got rid of last year but had to increase length of mortgage term so we will be paid up in 2018. Hoping to be able to overpay at some point to bring that down. Oh I forgot to say in case people think figures don't add up........we took out a second mortgage for 18,000 to do some home improvements which will also finish in 2018.
My original end date was 2013 so if I can overpay Im hoping that can still happen.:DMake £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
We were 21 and 24 when we bought our house in 1990, 3 bed semi for £55k with interest rates thro' the roof. repayments were something like £600 per month and this took 2 weeks wages to pay it......
Now it worth about £180k with everything that we have done to it and have got about 3 years left to pay - with my overpayments - thanks to this site and the wonderful suggestions. Sold endownment and paid it off mortgage too.0 -
Hi
I was 28 and wife 28 when we bought a house together, however, wife (then girlfriend) bought at 25. The house we bought cost £90K and is now worth £220K so we are happy0 -
My mum died when I was 11, she was 34 and I was thrown out of home by my step mother through no real fault of my own when I was 16 so I ended up married at a young age. We bought our first house back in 1979 off my mother inlaw, she had bought it off the Coal Board for £3k a few months previous and sold it to us for £8.5k it was a three bed semi on a coal mining estate, I was 19 years old and my deposit was made up of a £250 that my grandad left me when he died (thank you grandad) and the landlord gave us£500 to move out of the flat that we were renting because he wanted to sell it, we had a baby daughter and a son on the way at that time and moving out of an unsoundproofed flat with on heating into a house with a garden for the children was a dream come true. My husband and I split and I paid him off and he deserted me with 2 young children to bring up alone, which was a struggle. I got a job with a bank and had a mortgage off them and bought a brand new 4 bed detached in the best part of town for a knock down price of £70k because the builder went bankrupt this was in 1992. I lost my then teenaged daughter in a RTA, a drunk driver killed her and I lost the will to live at this time. I then met my current hubby and we sold my house and bought a bungalow in 2001 for £103k and refurbished it top to bottom we sold it about a year ago because my husband lost his job when Rover Cars closed and sold it for a £200k so we did very well out of that. We have now both got new jobs and bought a 250 year old cottage in an unspoilt village in the Peak District and I am living a dream after so many years of struggling to make ends meet and personal tradegy. We paid more for the cottage than we wanted to spend and we dont expect to pay the mortgage off by the time we retire, but we arent too concerned because the next dream is a small home by the sea in the UK and a small home somewhere abroad, we are already thinking about buying a buy to let with some money my wonderful aunt (my grandads sister) left me (thank you aunty). I believe that if you want something bad enough and you hold on to a 'realistic' dream you will get what you want in the long term with a little patience. I have waited 46 years for my dream cottage in the countryside and every day I wake up and still cant believe that I have been able to 'choose' where I wanted to live in such a beautiful part of the country and jobs, schools, children and lack of money hasnt influenced the decision.0

Aged 23 in 2003 - £51k
Looking forward to inflation eroding the relative size of the repayments. Must be one of the few good things about getting old?;)0 -
