1995, I was 23 and I borowed 3x my graduate salary to buy a studio on the Isle of Dogs with a 5% deposit. Total mortgage £39000, flat cost £42k.
The only reason I bought was that the endowment mortgage was cheaper than my portion of the rent in the shared house I was renting in! I had no idea what I was doing.....

I started of in 1998 at the age of 23.
The house was a 3bed semi and cost me £43k - hard to believe now! My 1st mortgage was for £22k on a repayment. I was fortunate in that I had a deposit which my father left to me in his will.0 -
I was twenty when I got my first mortgage in 2000 for a massive £25k, have since increased the mortgage to £30k to do some works and reduced the term to ten years. Hoping to reduce the term again.0

I was 33 when I got my first mortgage on my own for £34k just 4 years ago.
Now, our mortgages total £240k (although the properties are worth £420k) so I haven't done too badly I suppose at the end of the day.
Great thread, well done to OP for starting it.0 -
I started at Age 22 in 1986, amount £19,000, for half a house costing £42,000. I still only own half a house (just not the same house or OH). I became mortgage free at the age of 39 (I just woke up one day in my early 30s and decided to pay it all off before I was 40, come what may.)0

I was 28 also in 2000, can't believe so many young people on here. Is affordability really an issue?0

I was 22 and it was 100% mortgage on a £24K 2 bed terrace.
My mortgage interest rates peaked at 16.5% - but we got MIRAS so effectively only 11%. I'm 44 now and have just realised I've been paying a mortgage for nearly half my life.

28 I think. I didn't start working until I was 25 though, so not bad really!0
