I'm uncomfortable with fitting 4 kids into 3 spaces or 3 kids into 2 spaces in the rear of a car. When you have a front or rear impacts you have crumple zones. With a side impact there is no space for the kids to go. Side impacts involve considerable intrusion as there are no crumple zones. Sure there are door beams, curtain airbags and on a few rare cars rear side airbags.
I hadn't thought of it like that, but then because it has a lap belt for the middle seat, I was assuming the car technically seats 3 in the back anyway or it would if they were adults. The problem seems to be the size of the child car seats as they take up more space than a normal grown person.
The cost has ruled out the multimac for us anyway as it has the 46k Landrover someone was offering as well! :rotfl:0 -

If you are considering a new car, I would recommend having a look at Vectras or Mondeos.
I had a mk4 golf and recently bought a 2004 Vectra. The boot is huge, there are 3, 3 point seat belts in the back. I have 2 kids, so only have 2 car seats, but the difference from the Golf is massive, it is so much easier.
Also, the buggy fits in the boot with a weeks worth of shopping, where as it was a struggle to get the buggy in the golf boot (even though they are not small boots!).
You could get say a 2004 Mondeo or Vectra for less than £2k. Probably get about £500 or so for your Golf.
It is all extra expense I know, but personally I think it would be worth it in the long run.0 -
Thanks to all for your help. We've decided to look for a people carrier in the end as it does seem to make more sense and also make it more likely we'll get all the car seats in that we're going to need. So, initially we're going to look at VW Touran & Sharan, Ford Galaxy, Seat Alhambra and a couple more I can't remember the names of as I'm not doing that bit of the research!0
