3 child seats in the back of a Golf?

Does anyone know if we should be able to get 3 child seats in the back of our old Golf? We have 2 year old twins and are expecting our third child in September. The middle "seat" in the car has a lap belt rather than a shoulder strap and we're unsure as to whether you can get carseats to fit with a lap belt. Most of the car seat manufacturers websites won't even admit that our 1996 car exists.

When we had young kids this was a problem that we had. The middle seat of our cars only had lap belts. Back then the only car seat that could be used with a lap belt only was the Maxi-Cosi Priori XP. The problem if you get one of these is that you may not be able to get your hands in between the centre child seat to access the seat belt buckles for the twins. Believe me, when it's raining and you're strapping them in the seat belts will be awkward.

That place sells specially designed car seats that will fit in most cars, the problem is they are very expensive!!

I do not think 3 car seats will fit in the back a Golf. First of all there probably won't be enough room, second most car seats require 3 point seat belts.

Maybe you could enquire as to getting one car seat in the front, two in the back, with one passenger squeezing in the middle at the back. Not sure if you can have car seats in the front of your car though.

If you have teh original owners manual, have alook to see how many ISOfix points are located in the back.
Many years ago (at least 25!) I added bolts and straps to my Mums 2CV so she could use 3 chaild seats, but I cant remember if these were ISOfix or not
  • Thank you all, that's really helpful. It's good to know there is at least one seat which should work with a lap belt and the idea of putting one in the front instead is a good one as well if we can make that work. I'll also look at the owners manual and the multimac website, although the cost of the seats is possibly more than the current value of the car!

The multimac seats are a good idea in theory, but the prices are VERY expensive. The seat costs £1099, then the car seats that go onto the seat cost £249 EACH, so you are looking at least £1846. As you said worth more than the car!

Probably cheaper to buy a 6 seater car. :rotfl:

You should be able to get three child seats in the back of a Golf if you don't fasten them down.

    Job done.

I am sure the kids would fit in the boot too, would probably be safer. :rotfl:

You have to buy the seats as well?! I didn' realise that when I had a quick look at the site earlier. At the last check, our car was worth around £500!
