    I have just inserted an external wireless conn for the laptop which works now. Does this mean the internal wireless card is kaput? Anyway, thank you all for your input and help. You are all flippin fandabadozi.

    did you try that. It sounds like you've managed to knock off the wireless function on the laptop. I did it a few weeks back myself.

    No, just incorrectly configured to look for a peer to peer wireless network rather than a wireless access point (wireless router). To fix this, go into Control Panel - Network Connections. Right-click Wireless Network for the internal wireless card - Properties - Wireless Networks tab. Remove all networks listed in Preferred networks. Then click Add to create a new wireless network, or run Wireless Network Setup wizard in Control Panel.
