Every Asda petrol station that I have been to with self payment on the pumps has a sign stating they will pre authorise £20 on a debit card and if you take less than £20 of fuel then a refund may take time, or something similar. Personally I use a Asda credit card for the extra discount (now only 1p per litre though) and it always authorises £99 as the limit, but only debits the £70 or so I usually draw in fuel.

I think that only applies to Electron and Solo cards. I've used pay at pump before when there was only £15 on one of my debit cards for a £10 fill up. And plenty of times when there has been less than £100 on the card and it tells me to fill up to a max of £99 before.

As others have said it's pre-authorisation.

I've used this to my advantage before (though wouldnt recommend it) got locked out of my main bank account and needed fuel desperately, got an old card out which had about £1.50 on and used that at the pump, put £15 in and transferred the cash straight over when I got home, the £1 had gone and 50p remained. Handy to know if you're desperate like I was at the time!
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.

Depends what you drive !! Takes about £45 to fill mine. Lasts about 2 weeks.

I either lead a very sheltered life, or live in a completely different type of area than people on here, because I have never, ever seen that on a pump at Asda.

Not used ASDA petrol for some time but they used to have a sign saying buying £20 of fuel with debit cards
and they will be debited by £50/£100??

And any unused amount will be credited back to your card. But it can take several days.

This was at the payatpump outside normal hours.

Sorry, never seen it. Maybe it is area specific.

I will say that I have seen it too- most recently in Oxfordshire.
