Debit card 'deposit' when paying for fuel at the pump

Every Asda petrol station that I have been to with self payment on the pumps has a sign stating they will pre authorise £20 on a debit card and if you take less than £20 of fuel then a refund may take time, or something similar. Personally I use a Asda credit card for the extra discount (now only 1p per litre though) and it always authorises £99 as the limit, but only debits the £70 or so I usually draw in fuel.0

I think that only applies to Electron and Solo cards. I've used pay at pump before when there was only £15 on one of my debit cards for a £10 fill up. And plenty of times when there has been less than £100 on the card and it tells me to fill up to a max of £99 before.0 -
As others have said it's pre-authorisation.The man without a signature.0

I've used this to my advantage before (though wouldnt recommend it) got locked out of my main bank account and needed fuel desperately, got an old card out which had about £1.50 on and used that at the pump, put £15 in and transferred the cash straight over when I got home, the £1 had gone and 50p remained. Handy to know if you're desperate like I was at the time! This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.0

I either lead a very sheltered life, or live in a completely different type of area than people on here, because I have never, ever seen that on a pump at Asda. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Not used ASDA petrol for some time but they used to have a sign saying buying £20 of fuel with debit cards
and they will be debited by £50/£100??
And any unused amount will be credited back to your card. But it can take several days.
This was at the payatpump outside normal hours.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Sorry, never seen it. Maybe it is area specific. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
