I went to pick up a parcel from the delivery office one morning before work and I got there a bit early, I was shocked!! There was a woman loading up a van with parcels, she was literally throwing them from standing at the back of the big transit van to the very front of the van, including one which was plastered with Fragile. I lost all faith in them then!

i'm a bit dubious about that story. Most Post Office vans are small and any big vans i've seen have never been transits.
Plus..... it's a well known fact that women can't throw.

I just assume this will happen at every stage in its journey and wrap it accordingly, then it doesn't get damaged.Writing fragile on will do sweet FA, especially when you compare it to an extra yard of bubble wrap.

but surely the whole point of marking a parcel as Fragile is to ensure that posties take pleasure in bouncing it off every surface they can before taking it to the doorstep of their customer, ringing the bell, shoving a red 'Something for you/Sorry you were out' Card through the letterbox quicker than you can make it to the door - while legging it back to the van playing keepy uppy with the fragile item all the way?

But surely it's like anything, and you can only base your opinions on what you've experienced.

If someone had never been to a dentist before and if the first time they went they ended up in agony for the next few days due to the dentist not doing the job correctly, not knowing any better might well assume that this was normal and all dentists would be the same.

Probably the very large majority of posties are conscientious, but if fishfins hasn't seen how they handle packages, they can't base their opinion on them.

I'm inclined to agree with the African gentleman's assessment.

The odds of seeing an isolated incident are low (by definition), so it's not reasonable to assume that seeing packages being thrown about isn't the standard practice and is isolated. But by the same token it's not reasonable to extrapolate the practices of the royal mail by one sighting of an employee and assume they are being thrown about as standard.

What is reasonable is to conclude that your packing being thrown about is possible (whether or not likely) based on the evidence of seeing it happen to other people's packages and losing faith in the system because of that. Whether it's common practice or one in many thousands doing it is largely immaterial.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

If that was the only postie that you had ever seen, you might well be lead to believe that were indeed all drunkards, but as most people have seen dozens, if not hundreds of sober ones, we know that this isn't the case.
