Seems the question "Just another thought...can you buuy fresh or UHT skimmed milk out there too? hasn't been answered so here is a definative answer about buying milk in France, I know, I was in SuperU 30 mins ago.
First most French only use sterallised milk, sold in "bricks". lately they have started selling UHT milk, in the chilled cabinet, near the butter but only semi skimmed and full cream is available for both types of milk.
I have never found skimmed milk here, it may be available in large towns though.

Skimmed milk is certainly available in Cora and Carrefour... haven't been in a SuperU for a while.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

OK. We don't have those here in the sticks, Just Super and HyperU, LeClerc and Lidl and none of those in this area do skimmed milk. Same with cream by the way, just full and semi-skimmed.

Most milk in France is used for cooking. They're not great tea drinkers, and don't put it in coffee.
So there has never been any demand for fresh milk, and again the french normally cook with full fat milk, not skimmed.

Larger supermarkets have started carrying some UHT skimmed milk, and fresh full fat and semi skimmed in recent years, and it's feeding down slowly, but don't hold your breath.

Thank you for this. I know I sound ridiculous, but I am a real teapot and like my tea with skimmed milk - hence the question.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. :)

    We always take powdered.
  • Back from a great fortnight - can confirm that small quantities of fresh full fat and semi-skimmed can be bought from the larger supermarkets, but had to settle for UHT skimmed. Thanks for the help with the colour of the labels - this really helped.

And I took my carrier bags with me and saved a fortune! Though perhaps next time I should worry more about finding alternative routes down and will save far more not having to pay tolls!
