The ones they tend to have free tend to be quite flimsy so we tend to buy a bag for life if we do indeed up in a French supermarket.

Thanks for all the info folks. I shall pack my canvas shopping bags in the caravan. They'll be handy for the beach as well so will get plenty of use.

This is France, Europe you're talking about? Or some other France, maybe on the Moon? ;)

Yes, of course you can buy skimmed milk. It's called lait ecreme. Just don't assume that the bottle top colours follow the same convention as here.

Lait ecreme is full fat afaik, semi is Demi ecreme. As far as I remember, semi is usually blue top and normally sold in either 1 or 2 litres only.

lol i would agree with you there,

last time i was there the plastic bags weren't as freely available as over here, you had to ask for them for more bags

Full fat is lait entier. Skimmed is lait ecreme as I stated above. You are correct about semi-skimmed being demi ecreme.

Seems the question "Just another thought...can you buy fresh or UHT skimmed milk out there too? hasn't been answered so here is a definative answer about buying milk in France, I know, I was in SuperU 30 mins ago.
First most French only use sterallised milk, sold in "bricks". lately they have started selling pasturised milk, in the chilled cabinet, near the butter but only semi skimmed and full cream is available for both types of milk.
I have never found skimmed milk here, it may be available in large towns though.
