I have got a new nokia phone, an older model.

I have to put it on charge for its first charge, how long should I put it on charge for?

How many hours, is it approximately?

I know it will show maximum charged, but I need to know roughly as I am on the go often.

EDIT- It is a BL-5C 1020 mAh Li-Ion battery

It depends on the kind of battery. Chances are it is a Lithium-Ion rather than a Nickel-Cadium one. Lots of guides will tell you to charge it for a few hours on the first go, some will tell you to half charge it, discharge it and then fully charge it. The reality is that Lithium-Ion batteries do not suffer from 'the memory effect' that Nickel-Cadium batteries do and so all of these charging rituals mean nothing.

The only things that impact on the life of a Li-Ion battery are : frequency/infrequency of use, number of cycles (charges and discharges), completely discharging the battery (this is bad) and operating temperature.

If you charge it for 30 mins when you first use it then it won't be fully charged but it won't have any effect on how much charge it can hold and it certainly won't affec the overall working life of the battery.

Don't overcomplicate things. Just connect the phone to the charger and leave it until the morning.

Extended charging is a bad idea. Just connect the charger and when the phone says the battery is full, disconnect the charger.

Does the phone not stop charging automatically when the battery is full - like all charges for Li-ion batteries? (and like advanced charges for Ni-Mh batteries)

Years ago nokia used to advise 1st 3 charges were for a minimum of 16 hrs each, don't know if this still stands with technology now

This is why the charging circuits in modern electronics will cut off once a device is fully charged. Meaning the user has nothing to worry about at all.

A Li-Ion battery can be charged at anytime for any amount of time, and this won't have any affect on the amount of charge it holds.

until it says fully charged, keep an eye on it as being partly charged is normal, the bl-5c is an old fashioned battery but the advice about 16 hour charges refers to much older technology than this
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?
